Greetings everybody !! I just registered on this forum hoping to educate myself on the art of detecting. Yesterday, I purchased a BH Quick Draw II (hence my login name) from Amazon. It will be here Thursday, (4/17). I'm really stoked by it. I have never been "prospecting" or "shooting" before (except for locating my lost car keys with a cheapie "borrowed" detector). I live in North Texas and will soon start researching history records about the area hoping to find historical areas that may yield some artifacts. But...I can't lie!!! I would love to find the metal of ALL metals, GOLD! What the heck...at over $1000 an ounce...why not? So...any advice on this model would be greatly appreciated! Wish me luck!
 
welcome to the forum and to the addiction/ hobby we like to call metal detecting. i just bought my first one a couple of months ago if that long, and i find myself wanting to go out everyday. i havent found much but its enough to make me wanna try again the next day. good luck with your machine i hope you like it when it comes. im still getting used to mine. takes awhile for me. and i hope you find lots of GOLD..... Most of all enjoy the nature and have fun....HH
 
Thanks Dobbie...I'm sure it will be relaxing as well as exciting! I own 10 acres of land that I'll start with first. From what I've read in the past, my land is in the path of an old cattle trail that ran from Mexico to Kansas City. This would explain why my tract of land is saturated with mesquite trees which run from Mexico to the north. You see....mesquite in not native to North Texas. It's only native to Mexico and the southwest The path itself is about 2 to 3 miles wide. Ya never know how many cowboys have rode this trail and perhaps lost some artifacts of old!!!
 
definite good place to start. i only wish i could hunt it with you. i dont have much to hunt here. i live in an railroad town that mostly has been built over. the only historic spot we have left are an old roundhouse that has the main wall still up and the old stage coach station which has one wall still standing. and the ground is full of rocks and old rock quarries are everywhere. i just wish the old racetrack wasnt built over with houses. :cry: iminagine what could be found there. anyways im sure you will find many interesting items in your searches. make sure to post as I as well as others here would love to see your finds. HH
 
hi quickdraw, it's good that you are already doing your homework. welcome, my friend. it's a great forum here with many good and talented people. i also own a qd2/pioneer 202, and have had many good days with it. patience and persistence are the keys. you are on prime land. when the machine arrives, watch the dvd/tape 10 times and carry the instructions with you when you start hunting. really! if looking for gold, set the discrimination down as low as it will go. and jack up the sensitivity up as far as the machine will let you without crackling and breaking up. silver comes in as a very high beep. good headphones are a must, so you might want to go on and get them now. use good batteries like energizers and duracells; your machine deserves no less than that. no time or room for cheapies. gold is good, quickdraw, but iv'e heard that original sherriff's badges, ounce for ounce, are 10 times more valuable than gold. just food for thought. here in central va. the hunting is good. yeehawwww! hh,
 
You are going to love the QDII. Learn to listen what it's telling you because it knows what it's talking about. Master the fundamentals and before long you will diggin-n-postin with the best of em. You have a very solid dependable machine, not too much of a learning curve and loves to find coins. Don't hesitate to ask questions, several of us on the forum have the same machine, you'll get good solid advice. Enjoy the Hunt.

I own a QDII also and I love it. It will talk to you and let you know what is under it's coil. Lately I have been hunting using the Notch button, it works for me.

Welcome to the forum...The QDII is a great machine...I have owned a Pioneer 202/Quick Draw II, Pioneer 505/Sharp Shooter II, and now the LandStar...All were great machines...They all ring loud and proud on Quarters and Dimes and all Silver...Nice crisp clean HIGH Ping sound....You do not even have to look at the LCD...you know your gonna be digging something good...learn her well, and listen to what she tells ya...She will seldom lie to you...

Thanks everybody for all your advice. I was pretty confident in my purchase of this model. I did some research on other models and manufacturers, but for the features and price, this one seemed to be the best one. And of course, I'll read the manual and watch the video before even attempting to use it. As soon as I spend a full day with it outside, I'll post my findings. Besides my land, there are a few old homesteads nearby that may need to be searched. I'll have to find the land owners first to get permission since they're abandoned or dilapidated houses. This being Texas, I don't want to get shot by Yosemite Sam!!!
 
Excellent! My QDII arrived today. I read the manual once already, and will read it again a few more times. I thought there would be a instructional DVD, but I guess not. Did anybody else get a DVD with they're QD!!??? Thanks!
 
Let me start by saying welcome QDMcGraw, I'm a newbie too. I Got my QDII as a gift this last x-mas and I love it, I'm having a lot of fun, but I'm still learning. I didn't get an instructional DVD with mine either. I've tried to find it on-line with no success. I need to just contact BH but I keep getting sidetracked. I will say this about this forum though, these guys know there stuff. I don't speak up much I have to give credit where it's due. Almost every question I had in mind when I joined was answered by reading through the past pages. After reading them I literally looked at the places around my home differently and noticed at least 5-7 places near me that I can hunt without disturbing anyone (at least I don't think it will, I'm still looking into them) that I never would have thought about if I hadn't read it here. I've also heard about this beginners luck thing where a newbie finds something pretty good during one of their first times out. I don't know about you but I'm still a-waitin, might change my login to Charlie Brown...LOL Good luck and have lots-a fun.
 
Welcome to the Bounty Hunter Community. Research, research, research. You can go off to lots of places and find a few things, but learning good spots sometimes takes research. Last Saturday, after finding a set of old abandoned softball fields, I found roughly seven dollars in dimes and quarters, a gold men's bracelet, a diamond ring and a small watch. I know lots of libraries in Texas have access to different data bases. One I found most useful is this one. http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/cgi-bin/texshare/authenticate.pl On there is a site for the Texas Digital Sanborn Maps. It shows lots of what cities used to look like, so you can develop some sources from there. Your library can give you the passwords and access codes. The maps are from the 1890's to the 1950's for many areas. I live in Central Texas and have found them very useful.
 
I have learned that Bounty Hunter no longer issues the DVDs or tapes with all their units any more...too bad...They were helpful...

That may be but KELLYCO includes an Instructional Video with purchases. On their website they show a videotape but when you place your cursor over the image of the videotape you get a temporary popup that says DVD and they price it at $9.95 and, I'm sure, postage and handling. I wonder what the product contains and if it's geared towards the particular detector they sell it with. It sounds like it would but it could be a generic Instructional Video/DVD.

Rivermarine, Thanks for the input on the Sanborn maps. I called the local library and she said to come in and get a library card, and she'll give me the access to the Texshare databases. Sounds like a great research tool ! I'm still tinkering with my BHQDII. I'm also reading and re-reading the manual. But I haven't gone out detectoring as of yet. Hopefully this weekend. And thanks to all who have posted here. Your help is greatly appreciated!
 
Welcome ya'll, I ordered a 10" coil for my qd2 yesterday and asked about the video and as BH-LandStar said they don't put them in the package nor a warranty card either, at least that is what I was told. The lady went on to say just keep the sales receipt as proof of purchase. Any way have fun.
 
I am beginning to believe that not many of the boards go bad on the Bounty Hunter Machines...They are built pretty solid....I think that it is so cheap for them to fix their machines, that they no longer adhere so tightly to filling out warranty cards...I did not even have to produce a receipt to get a return confirmation number...Heck!...I am not even the original owner of the LandStar...I think they value customer service above all else, and just wish to keep their customers happy, and I have to say with certainty, that I AM!!!!
