Help Identify CW relic.

Found this at a Civil War site. Could this be a cannonball fuse? I have seen photos that look exactly like this, except mine has an extension on both sides of the threaded portion. One picture shows what appears to be a chunk of black material that is almost fused to the threads. The threads also seem to have the same material in between them.

Any help would be appreciated.

what material is this object made out of? I see no green patina on it, and fuses were usually made of copper or a brass composite. The fuse I found this spring was tapered, and had green patina on it.

I have not determined what it is made of. It is real heavy but is not soft like lead. I hate to scratch around on it until I find out a bit more about it. Here is a picture of my find next to a picture in one of the treasure magazines my detecting buddy has. This is what started us thinking it might be a fuse.

When I get home this evening I will take a few photos of the ends. There are no holes in the ends. They look solid. We were thinking maybe it was a percussion type that did not fire and broke out upon impact. Our other concern is that it could still be live. I have it in a safe place.
