Anyone know what kind of rock this is? How do you tell if it's gold or something else?

If the orangish stuff flakes off in little flat shiny flakes then I would say muscovite or phlogopite. These are sheet silicates like biotite. The rock itself would probably be a low metamorphic grade gneiss.
