Notch is NOT the way to go...DISC mode is your best bet...If your hunting for relics, keep the DISC all the way CCW. If your coin and jewelry hunting, turn the DISC knob to about 9 o'clock position...this should eliminate most iron objects, but keep you in the gold range.....Notch puts up an electronic window...think of it as being on a football field. One end of the field has iron and the other has Silver...Think of the notch as the chains...The 10 yards between the chains is the notch window...you can slide the notch window up and down the field and everything in the window is no longer picked up by your detector...So, you can notch out pull-tabs and screw caps and still get iron/foil, nickels, zinc, copper, brass and silver, or you can notch out zinc pennies and still get everything else...See the difference between this and DISC mode...disc mode is like the sun's shadow on the field...as it rolls across the field, it starts eliminating iron fist, then iron and foil, then iron, foil, and nickel, then iron, foil, nickel, and gold, etc....everything under the shadow is eliminated...So, hunting in DISC mode for normal hunting, or AUTO NOTCH for coin shooting are your best bets...
In both these modes, keep your SENS knob only as high as you can without getting false signals...I keep mine around Noon, unless I know I am in clean ground and can turn it higher...
