Is the brass pin wore out, or something else, its falling out quite regularly.XS 1. I tried the rubber band thing, and wraping shaft with electrical tape just doesnt seem to work.John

John,
You must have one of the orignal XS units which had the cracking problem in that area of the housing. They changed the design half way through the life of the XS and the new EXII was further improved.
The best thing you can do is give Dick Shultz a call in Las Vegas and get an estimate for the repair. They had done the work under an extended warranty type of repair but not sure if they will cover it at this point - either way, their repair costs are not exorbitant and DIck can give you an idea on what the cost will be.
Their number is (702) 891-8809
Hope this helps . . .

Wess,
No, the problem he is having is where the metal upper rod connects into the control housing. This is where the cracking problem showed up and needs to be repaired at the factory. Some people use either a rubber band or a balloon over the end of the metal rod so that it is bigger when it is inserted into the contrrol housing but that is simply a temporary fix until the cracking gets worse - at some point it will no longer be able to hold the upper shaft in place and it falls apart when swinging it.

I thought he was talking about the lower shaft where it connects to the coil. Thanks for clearing that up Andy. Do you know what year the plastic was upgraded? On a side note...when did they stop manufacturing the XS? Thanks
Wess

I have an original XS and it was fixed for the cracked housing. I have two upper shafts, the original and the one that came with my X-1 Probe. The original still falls out if a piece of tape is not applied around the upper shaft, the upper shaft with the X-1 Probe does not slip out, I believe that has a slight raised dimple on the shaft.

My point was, that with a new housing, my original shaft would still slip, but not the new dimpled shaft that came with the probe.
However, when I look at my locking mechanism, I feel that the black locking tab might be worn down and not applying enough pressure, since the part that would compress appears flattened somewhat.
But the housing is new and not cracked....

I have done the repair for my customers that had the XS models that had the shaft slipping out. It is an easy thing to fix. That is if the housing is not cracked. I saved my fellow detectorist from having a 3 weeks of no detecting.

and not the dimpled one, some sent in their shaft to SunRay for the probe modif or possibly the early ones done by SunRay used the original shafts, so it still could be your shaft.
If you see no cracks in the housing eminating at or near the brass pin than most likely your housing is not cracked that would affect the shaft problem.
Now, also look at the locking mechanism and see if the plastic looks worn out that compresses the shaft portion when closed.

My XS will begin slipping out when the brass pin has worked it's way out a little bit and improves greatly when re-centered. Good Luck!

My point was both are junk. <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D">
I'll be in touch soon about the button e-mail buy may have to read it several more times before I can make up an answer.

What I ended up doing was getting a small hose clamp and putting it around the area the shaft goes into the housing. It hasn't slipped since I did it a year ago. Easy and cheap, plus you won't be down while the machine is in the shop.
