Help with button I.D.

My daughter and I found this button in a rural area north of Burlington ON. and have been unable to locate a source of info for an I.D. It is all one piece, made of pewter or lead, and is about 1" in dia. Any thoughts or links would be much appreciated.
Great site Steve!

Greg, I would say that you have an early American colonial button. Not military.
Considering where you found it, north of Burlington, Ontario, my first impulse was American 1812, maybe even Revolutionary War, however, early in the Revolution the Americans adopted a numbering/lettering system for their regiments similar to the system used by the French and the British forces.
Just to cover my butt, there are a couple of long shots...

Thanks Steve, CC. Here is a view of the back of the button as requested. I have contacted my local museum to no avail. Even the R.O.M. in Toronto proved to be a dead end, they suggested the War Museum in Ottawa. Are there any experts that you could recommend?

I believe CC has some connections with Revolutionary War button collectors.
As I mentioned before, Greg, this is all a best guess, a theory based the information I could dig up on the search engines. Even so, I have a hunch if you do a few inquiries with collectors of Colonial American pewter, you will get a lot farther than the military button route.
Just in case, this is a link to the Hessian Historical Society:

They are very approachable, and if your button does have this lineage, you've struck gold.
Thanks for posting and good luck. Let us know if you find out anything more! <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">

I find this button very interesting but it looks nothing like any of the Rev War pewters from either side. No regiment is marked by either the name, or number, abbrev., symbols, nothing. It's truely amazing how many odd ball things can turn up at these sites and some things we will never find the answer to.
ps Greg, check your e-mail.

It is a very good match to the apostle John's emblem. It may have a religious connection.Luke's is a winged bull,Mark's a winged lion and Matthew's is an angel.
