Just bought a new Delta 4000 and would appreciate any helpful hints on settings. I have been running it on 55 discrimination, sensitivity on 8-10 and notching in nickles. should I set Disc. at 40 instead for gold or is 55 OK? Any help would be appreciated. I use to have a Mark III back in the 80's and really liked it but could not afford a upper end detector at this time.

I actually have been running my Delta 4000 on the factory settings for both descrimination and sensitivity. I hunted an elementary school park a few days back and was killing the coins with this thing. It was a little trashy and when i tried to bump the sensitivity up to 10( just for the heck of it) it was a little unstable so I went back down to 8 and it was perfect. These Greek series detectors are really sensitive but I like that. Can't wait to get the smaller coil and hunt some more parks. Don't feel left out for not being able to afford a high end detector right now.You will really be surprised at how good this machine is for the price.I have owned quite a few high end machines in the past but this Delta 4000 is soooo much fun. I am very satisfied with this detector for such a small out of pocket expense.

In response to your post I have found if the area is pretty free of trash running the disc. at 40 is OK. I listen for the tones anyway and not so much the numbers. In high trash areas I put the disc. on ten, shorten my swing and go real slow. Tonight I dug a 1918 wheat doing that in an area I know I have been in. Pay real close attention to those deep signals in the 77-81 range. That is where I have located older wheats and indian heads. The Delta is a great machine.
I think it's great that you aren't afraid to experiment. It's the only way that you are going to learn all that the Delta is capable of. I love mine. I generally keep my Delta in Discrimination 10 - I like to hear where the iron is, as well as the good stuff (no offense to you relic hunters), but I'm willing to pop it into AM when I really want to get deep. Buttons are meant for pushing so go ahead and see what your Delta can do!
I've never known the Delta 4000 to lie.. it Does get fooled a bit especially with rusted iron, but by learning your machine you will be amazed at what you can pull out of the ground.
Now go get the good stuff!

Thanks everyone for your input. I went out the other day and found my first silver ring and 33 coins. Had 3 Wheats and the rest clad, but was hunting an area I knew would have mostly clad just so I could get use to the machine. So far so good. Found one of the wheats (1919S) about 5 inches deep and the soil is so dry that its like powder down to 3 inches. Cant wait until it rains a little. I know it will even work better then. Thanks Again.
