Help with my teknetics t2

matt-17367

New member
i went out with my teknetics t2 yesterday for the first time and it was my first time ever metal detecting so i think its me not doing it right but when i was detecting i was getting alot of signal jumping for example i was getting an id number of 82 and then when i was digging it changed to 35. Also alot of the time my id number just kept jumping up and down really fast so i didnt get a clear reading and also found it hard to pin point at times i was detecting on uk soil. Is there anyone who has the t2 and can help me thanks.

If that was your first time metal detecting, and you're doing it with a top-end, very sensitive metal detector, then the "learning curve" might be a tougher challenge for you. It might take a little longer, but we also need to know what type of site you were searching; what you were searching for; and especially which control settings you were using.

A brief thought might suggest you needed to use the Fast Grab function to achieve a 'proper' Ground Balance, and you might have also had the Sensitivity set too high for the conditions. Additionally, your sweep speed and search coil presentation could add to the random-reading VDI numbers.

Now, the art of pinpointing usually takes a little time to master, and it is harder to learn (for most people) when the search coil is a larger-size and if of Double-D design. Most targets, if round like a coin and laying flat on the ground (or in the ground with relationship to the search coil), can be pinpointed about center of the search coil. If the target is odd-shaped, canted, or has a close-by additional metal target, then pinpointing will usually be a bit off to one side or the other.

Let us know what settings you were using as well as the site you're hunting and targets you're after.

Thanks,

Monte

i was detecting on farmland i did the fast grab ground balance and it was setting it to 65 and i was using sensitivity 70 and tones +1 on all metal mode and i was just hunting for anything really mainly coins and relics. is it a good detector i have got or would i be better with a different one

Matt,
You have one of the best detectors money can buy, But it will take some time to learn. I would start off in the disc. mode at around 80
and tones on 3 as to tone out everything except high coins, and go to a park or school or maybe your own yard and listen for the high beep beep tones you get when you go over a target ,and then check your screen and see if what you are hearing is indeed a good target and the numbers are holding a constant reading. You should when you get a good" beep " "beep" tone then turn 90' degrees to it and see if you have the same tones, if so try to pin point which is a little easier in disc. mode and then check your depth and dig," ALSO ALWAYS PRACTICE GOOD DIGGING SKILLS AND ALWAYS FILL IN YOU HOLES" nothing will discourage you more than to have someone come up and yell at you for destroying their property.
It is a lot easier to find lots of coin targets than to start out looking for relics. Practice " " " throw some coins in your yard and try to locate them listen to the tone you get when you find them.
You will have somewhat of a learning curve with this machine but by no means should it be to complicated to start finding things right off if you set it up right.
Hope this helps and best of luck to you.

Read the book........ It's important you understand the detector and what it can do. Learn the terms used, and what they mean. Post up here what you don't understand. There are some real experts on the T2 right here on Findmall.

After you know what each setting is for, "apply what you want", in the field. Sens setting, Discrimination setting..Tones...

The T2 is a very fast response detector. You will hit many targets in the ground. Actually you will hit more than the average detector will hit in a sweep due to the fast response of the detector.

Fast grab the Ground balance ..start with a lower sensitivity say 40 on your first time outings..........Listen for the high tones, or low depending on what you are looking for on a sight...

Swing your coil evenly over the ground just ahead of your feet. Do not raise the coil up at the end of your left right swings. Keep it on the ground.
Swing shoulder to shoulder .

Try to bury a few coins from 1 to 5" in the ground in a clean spot.. No iron no junk in the ground... About a foot apart. Practice your swing speed, checking your Id and listen for the sounds.. This is discrimination mode I am talking about. Then switch to all metal and listen and look at Id's.. You will do very well after some practice.. Do not get frustrated..it takes some time ............

Thanks for all your advice so whats the best possible setting for me to use if i want to find old coins just to start out with.

Proper ground balance is key! Make sure sensitivity isint to high. It's a very deep machine even at 40ish sens. Listen good solid repeatable hits.

I'd love to fly over there & help you personally ;)
As others have mentioned, your just a beginner with one of the most powerful detectors ever made. It's just going to take lots of practice & several hours to begin to get a handle on things. Finding a couple coins will help. But start by getting away from "all metal" & into disc mode. Then turning your sensitivity way down to even as low as 40 till you get a feel for things. Make sure your discrimination is 40 so you can silence all the nails. A "40-40 setting" is great for beginners (40 disc 40 sens). Also, I would start out with & stay with just 1 tone. Multiple tones often confuse the beginner. Then search for nice, loud, solid signals that repeat from all sweep angles. What you described can happen to anyone, that you swept over some iron & saw a "one way" 82 & started digging. Sweeping in from another angle may have dropped the number or even nulled out. But, the real issue was using all metal. If your doing farm fields, bury some coins in the ground to get a feel for what a solid signal is like. Then down the road you can increase sensitivity & maybe 2 tones when you feel more comfortable. Those fields have a ton of history in them.....stay patient & you'll be rewarded soon!
good luck,
Bill

Matt.........if you look at your 11" DD coil where the coil attaches to the rod, you will see a small circle. It almost looks like a mark left by plastic injection moulding process. This is the true center of the coil. The same mark, in the same location, is on both sides of the coil. Put a piece of brightly colored tape on the 'dot' until you are familiar with its location.
Like the previous posters said, the T2 is a thoroughbred in performance, you are not going to master it in one outing. For your type of hunting in the U.K. , its one of the best. You can turn the sensitivity down to 50, and still get better depth than most machines.
Alot of good advice from knowledgeable T2 users is being given to you. Heed the advice!!

Hi matt, i,m a uk t2 user, don,t be despondent regarding your first outing, as other chaps have said it,s a top end machine and perfect for british coins and artifacts, ....read your instruction book from cover to cover, then read it again......if you,ve mastered the quick grab, try sensitivity at 70, discrim at 12 and tones 2+, ignore the grunts and dig the high tones... i,d recomend not digging any thing under 50 "to start with" surface coke gives a nice high tone usually showing a 43 ,, ......Go onto uk and european detecting forum, ther,s some cracking t2 reviews by a chap called topcat uk... happy hunting BAZ

you could get a garret pinpointer to help .
you might need a bigger shovel with the T2 ,signals can be very deep

build a test garden in the back garden with a variety of targets buried at differing depths ,coins ,pulltabs, nails, cans ,and even a hoard of bronze pre decimal coins .this will give you somepractice.
