G'day, just wondering if anyone can help me with using a surfmaster P.I. I have just bought second-hand, I managed to find a manual online as it didn't come with one but it doesn't give too much information on using it. I have only had a chance to use it twice since I got it and have been operating it with both the controls set on the little purple triangles. I have dug up a few coins and a little bit of rubbish on the dry sand but don't seem to get any signals from the wet stuff !! Am I doing something wrong ?? The sand here is slightly mineralised if that is any help... Any advice would be much appreciated........Thanx

Set threshold, (tuner), to just hear audio.
Set pulse delay, (Disc.) to minimun setting, C/Clockwise.
Go find the goodies <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)"> <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">

So in other words, with the pulse delay knob being the on and off switch, you turn it until it clicks on the detector and turning it any more will start to delay the pulse timing - is that correct ???

On the Surfmaster PI I have here the "P" pre-set icon is just after you turn it on. That's where you want to be for maximum sensitivity for low conductive items.
You may not allways be able to operate smoothly there, but try it first.

Mr. Bill is right on with his reccomendation on the settings. The reason you haven't gotten anything in the wet sand is probably because you haven't gone over anything that was within detecting range. As the surf or waves travel over items they continuosly sink deeper into the sand until they reach a spot of equal density to the object or until they hit another object that isn't sinking any longer. In the beach areas that I have hunted (California & Florida) the usual movement of sand is that sand moves in during the summer months depositing sand onto the beaches and covering items and it moves out during the winter months. Of course there are storms, wind and current variations that can change the normal deposit and errosion of the beach sands. Some days I can't get a signal in the wet sand and other days it can be loaded with targets. Look for the days that have errosion and sand being taken out to sea. Time and experience will help you understand what times will most likely be productive. Even then you'll have times when you're sure it should be good and it won't be. Just keep at it and don't give up. Sooner or later you'll hit one of those real good days. Good luck!
Tom
