i use a homemade 6 inch when i get to the seashore and often wish i had an 8 inch....most appear to use 8 inch--less scoops to recover target...

It may be one of those things where you just need to try the scoop to see how it works for you.

I have a 6 inch diameter RTG Pro scoop that I've used for a few years. When we needed to fly rather than drive for a trip, I picked up a 5 inch diameter travel scoop. After one week with the 5 inch scoop, I ended up buying a 6 inch travel scoop before the next trip that we flew on. The RTG travel scoops, both 5 inch and 6 inch, fit in a large suitcase. I've read about some others who really like the 5 inch diameter scoops, but I don't. At full depth with the 5 inch diameter scoop, deep targets are not within reach and must have multiple digs to retrieve. Not so many scoops needed with the 6 inch scoop and many times the target can be reached with one deep dig. The 5 inch scoop is lighter to carry and the sand / clay / shells shake out a little quicker than the 6 inch ... but for me it is more about getting to the target in fewer scoops than quicker shake out.

So that's one guy's 2 cents.

PS For just dry sand, including tot lots, I like a very quick shake out that the 702 scoop with the wire basket provides, but don't even think about trying to dig and lift wet sand with that one. Wet sand and water is where I go with the RTG Pro 6 inch diameter or another big strong heavy scoop I have.

i agree with tvr i travel alot and i buy the old samsonite suitcases from the Goodwill store for 4.50 each. Strip out all the guts and fit my rtg travel 6" travel scoop and my small rtg travel sand scoop with the mesh basket, shaft snorkeling equip. The 6" scoop is perfect and if you are worried of losing it in the water teather it off to you wrist.
