Here's my hem weight collection. These were all found at old houses and old house sites.

You gotta love them hem weights!!!They really make your detector sing!!
 
They were sewn into clothing and curtains to help keep the wrinkles out. They are made mostly of lead but occasionally out of brass. They come in several sizes.

I've yet to examine a period military uniform that had hem weights. Most Frock coats were issued with a raw hem or piping. What I have found them in is curtains of the civil war period. I do feel sure that they would have been used in civilian clothing, but having a small lead weight whacking your thigh all day long would drive most men to drinking..lol Good hunting, David @ Dixie <center><a href="http://www.dixie-metal-detectors.com"><img src="/metal/html/d-m.jpg"></center>
