which was found by a friend of mine at a military base in the Ottawa Ont. area. It is about 2 inches high. Looks like a military had badge??? It is fairly heavy and solid copper/brass.

Looks like part of a cap badge, Andy. You can probably see the breaks on the side of the metal. Nice find.

I don't think this is a cap badge. Due to the way it attaches I would suggest that it was for a pouch, or was an overlay for a crossbelt plate. As a rule you don't use square nuts on long screws to hold on a hatbadge, something to do with square dints in you head and bad headaches
It is a cipher, but I would say it is closer in date to the turn of the centery.
All in all a very nice item.

...good point.
Check out the other Princess Louise regiments (both British and Canadian) and the same crown is used in the designs.
Since there is no mistaking the crowns and the motif, identical to the hat badge posted, I'll stand with the 4th Dragoon Guards.
Nice find!

This may be from one of the units that BECAME the the 4th. The open style Crown did not change on Regts that used it ( unlike most Regts that change the Crown from Kings to Queens Crown with the change of Royals) The badge you showed ( Very good job on that!!) is a WW2 Badge, this dug up item is earlier.
You are probably correct in thinking this has something to do with the 4th or one of the units that make up it's Linage.

also there were other units (that no longer existed by WW2 that used the same cipher)

This is Princess Louise's cypher, drawn by her own hand.
As well, a leather pouch carried by mounted officers!

Thanks for the help guys. The weight and finish would suggest older than WW11.

Looking for ww11 members of 4 PLDG for 6 JUne to Normandy
