Nice stuff. As far as the picture, it takes some practice. I use a free image editor called Picasa. It's available for free download at www.google.com if you click on "More" and go into the downloads area.
I ran your picture through an "Auto Contrast" and "Auto Color" filter and then re-sized it. It took a couple of minutes. Once you get to playing with the program you can do some awesome stuff with it. Here's the "tuned up" picture:
