Here's a real oldie detector, 1800-1900's. How'd you like to pack this puppy around.

... that detectors have been in use??!

Uncle Willy i sure wish you would wright a book with all the good tricks that you know,i would be one of the first in line to get one.

Been going to do one for years but can't get the lead out. Two of my witer buddies have published several and made out like a bandit. I may get one whipped out before I kick the bucket. I can't even get an article written and I used to pump out 25-30 a year.

I think the first attempt was made by Thomas Edison to locate a bullet in the President at that time who had been shot. The first real detectors as we know them were invented by Gerard Fisher in the early thirties and were based on the old radio directional finders to guide airplanes to their airport. Somewhere I have a pic of a huge one, bigger than the ones in the pic.

Actually, as I stated in the post before this one, detectors like we know them have been around since about 1931 when Fisher invented them.

Doeshe have one like that or a mine detector? The old mine detectors weighed a ton ( I'll post some pics of those ) and the battery pack weighed something like 40 pounds. That's what Charles Garrett started out with and why he designed and built his first regular detector.

I know, that's my point! Dr. Fishers first detectors weren't really user friendly, and the hobby detector didn't really become practical until the early 60's. But once they got going, the gates were open.
All this nostalgia trippin' is nice, and I appreciate it. Your work is legend in this hobby and this is fun stuff.

And each time I see one of these ads, I realize that for the last half a century or so... detectors have been prowling all over the place! We are all a little too late. No wonder its so damned hard to find more than the dibby-dabs any more.
