Here's a response I got from the Parks Dept. in Montgomery Alabama

I had emailed to see if I needed a permit to hunt parks in Montgomery and here's what I got:

As per my supervisor, Ann Mitchell, you don't have to have a permit, but
you can't dig holes in the parks. I apologize for taking so long to get
back to you. I've been on vacation. Good luck!

What is your take on this response???

You can swing yer tector all ya want but you aint allowed to dig any holes, drive on or cut or disturb in any way any grass or plant life nor are ya allowed to remove anything form the park that ya didn't carry in.
That's what the rule book says anywho but in many years o' tectin our county parks i have only encountered one park narc that enforced the law to the letter and chased us away. Many other park narcs were quite interested in tectin and asked many questions about it while i was diggin targets. FYI, our park narcs are also our local county Police or Sherriff Deputies.

They need to reply that way so as to not invite severe damage and to have something "official" on the books, however a slight cut in the sod and a lift is probably not going to upset anyone. Bring a couple of old Indian heads with you and if a park employee approaches you explain to him/her that you just enjoy finding the stuff. Give him/her the Indian head to keep and say "If I find anymore I'll see if there's anything you want to keep" (little white lie). They probably won't bother you since it's almost a given that metal detecting is OK in parks. Those parks have probably seen detectorists since the 80's. Good luck!
