Heres an interesting question

I have seen a good bit of post on the auto trac vs lock on g/b on the MXT and M6. I think everyone is on the same page as to when to use each method , but the thing I would like to know is how often does the auto trac sample the ground. Is it at so many seconds or minutes intervals? This would be very good to know just for curiosity sake and to have a better understanding of how your machine is working. I think a 1 minute or less sampling would be good, so if it tracks out you don't waste a lot of time before it resets itself. Does anyone have this info on the M6? ... Thanks.....Rich

Hold the detector with the coil approximately waist high. Turn on it but do not pump the coil (ground balance). Make sure you have an audible threshold. Place the coil on the ground. You will hear the threshold "level -out" as the tracking occurs. This will give you an indication of how quickly it tracks the ground. Where this proves useful is when you detect a target and have a hard time pinpointing or getting a good VDI. Simply move the coil to one side of the target, allow it to track, and then sweep the target again. It should ring in loud and clear. Works great in mineralized soil. Hope this helps.HH

The auto tracking is working so fast. I hunt in autotrac most of the time but do use lock G/B when in the densest trash and rust laden areas. But if its autotracking constantly, then there shouldn't be much chance of it tracking out in trashy park areas with lots of can slaw where there are spaces between the trash, right?. I get great depth in autotrac and was wondering how often it re G/B itself, Thanks for the replies...Rich

I would recommend in lots of trash or iron that you turn tracking off (lock). Remember, it will track out a good target and make it disappear. If you are tracking trash or iron you could miss a good target. Find some clean ground, perform ground balance and then lock it in. If you want to "see" tracking in operation, after you ground balance, switch to the Prospecting mode and check out your Ground Phase number. This number should be pretty consistent for your area. Check it from time to time to get a point of reference for your area. When you start seeing significant variances in this number that will tell you how mineralized your ground is. In my area I normally see low to mid range numbers (45 - 65). Larger numbers indicate more mineralization or man made iron.

I understand what you are saying Horsesoldier, I use the M6 and I don't have the MXT ,but I think in most areas here our soil is pretty mild. Thanks..Rich
