Here's an interesting site dealing with the digging of trenchs from WWI.

Thanks for the posting Craig. I accompanied some friends to an old bomb shelter in the Berkshires (Mass.) in high school. it was the same way. All the gear was the same as it had been since the 50's-70's. The place had a tunnel which connected another section and both sections were stocked with food, clothing, lanterns, kerosene etc. Luckily other trespassers had saw the place for what it was worth, a museum and time capsule for the history lover in all of us. Unfortuneately I heard the place caught on fire a time later and was POSTED. It was a shame I could not go back with better lighting but I'm grateful for the experience.
