Here's maybe a crazy question, especially to all the old timers like me who've scanned the ground while detecting......

do you still make it a habit to keep your head facing to the ground even while in the grocery store parking lot, or school parking lot or home depot etc., etc. etc..... I can't tell you how many quarters, dimes and even a few dollar bills I've picked up floating around and lying on the ground that others just don't see, to lazy, or just don't care. I guess old habits die hard, but I'm always scanning the ground to see what lies there.

Even prior to starting detecting, I had always searched and scanned below and all around.

Sure do, been doing this for years. I used to do this all the time since I started detecting. I still do it now as I trip a lot in my old age as we cant lift our feet like we did when we were younger . I spent close to 18 year or ss working in a tire shop and seem to look at everyone's tires for low ones, and having odd wear, seen a lot of bad wear and steel cords showing. I guess it just a hobby at looking at the ground from experience.

I had to chuckle at this.....because yes,i'm always looking at the ground just in case.
Ever seen the series Detectorists.......Andy's wife makes the comment to him that he's "always looking at the ground"......i guess it's just a natural thing to do after you have been metal detecting for years.

I do that too especially while walking across parking lots and at store checkouts.
Have founds lotof coins (at least one silver coin), and even paper currency.

Mark, since I started detecting thirty years ago, it seems that my eyes are always trained on the ground. Many times while detecting, I will spot a coin or on rare occasions paper money. When anywhere in public, I am on the "lookout" for just about anything. I am even trying to train my wife. If I can completely train her, we will double our area. Have a great holiday season.

Same here. I constantly scan the ground while walking, mustly the dog, and find stuff weekly. Quarter and junk kid's ring yesterday, key chain last week, dime, $20.00 bill, etc, etc. Most I found were 2 $20.00 bills blowing in the wind and found 3 - fake "movie money" $20.00 bills (look real real!) near an intersection. List goes on and, yea, doesn't seem like anyone else looks on the ground. BUT, years ago while golfing a dollar bill went floating by in front of me and before I could respond my golfing buddy pounced on it! Guess one time someone was looking on the ground and quicker than me!

The only people I see looking down (other than me) are the homeless and they're doing it for good reason. Everyone else is looking at their phones. My biggest score in paper money was 2 $100 bills folded together. I've found numerous gold and silver items over the years. I wish I had kept it all together in 1 box.

I've watched where I walk for many year's,, might be a habit that came from my early squirrel and rabbit hunting days ,, was always sneaking thru the woods trying not to make a sound.

I think it started at a very early age, 4 yrs old !!!! I was a wonderer. I got really lost on the beach. I was looking for shells ???? It had carried over til adulthood !!!
When walking across parking lots, always take a different path back. Im always looking for something. Best fine in a parking lot was a chunky 14k earing. Only the 2nd gold but
have found silver earrings many times.

Been a scavenger all my life. People throw out or loose soo may things its unreal. The other day while detecting a park, I thought how many coins have been lost ??? Back when I first started detecting the beach, I could say Ive found at least a 1,000 or more in one summer. Nowadays, Id be a lucky to find a few hundred.

My mother would always say, 'You just step in it !!!!' When people ask me whether detecting is worth it, I always ask, 'Did you ever find a $20 bill ?? $10??? $5???
If not, forget it. You just have to be the kind of person that 'FINDS things' !!!!

So, yes, my eyes are always looking to the ground..
