You dont heat up this wax... its more of a cleaner but leaves a protective coating.. works pretty good on pewter.. A bit price but lasts a long time

Jim, That's what I was going to use but decided to go with Trewax.
It has to be heated to achieve the best result, but does do a great job. Lots of fumes given off which I'm not real sure about so I do not breath the stuff in. Most waxes can not provide as hard a finish as the Trewax can. Archaeologists and and serious collectors have used this for a while, it just takes some time for the info. to filter down to us little guys.

Although I have read about many guys sealing their buttons with a combination of white glue and something else. (Can't remember)

spray lacquer into the field while hunting, more than once a pewter button will start falling apart before you get it home.

but I am lucky that most of mine are one step above that. Still toasty but will hold together at least until I get home. This year I have dug two that I felt I needed to be stabilize right away, all the others were ok.
The big thing in the field is protecting it well. A pouch of other finds will easily destroy a frail button. If my pewter was that bad I sure would carry something in with me.

I carry small manilla envelopes to put the "good" small finds in. That system has been working good for me for a few years now.

of unmarked pewters. Not too pretty huh.
Usually with this many there would be quite a few military. Not really the case for that round.

I like that, think I will use it from now on.
This year has been pretty good but most finds are from fairly well detected sites. I don't usually get much each trip but sometimes a pouch full isn't needed to make the day.
Sure would be nice to hit a coffee can hunt before freeze up.
