i buried a quarter at 8 inches and my explorer 2 won't pick it up. tried several coils from 5 inches to 15 inch wot coil. i was under the impression that they would detect to at least 12 inches. i have the coins checked in the advanced mode and the background hum wouldn't even break. tried factory preset still nothing. tried pushing pinpoit button and holding it still directly above it and nothing. am i doing something wrong or was i misinformed about the depth capabilities. my email is currently down so please post message thanks

Most detectors will not pick up a freshly burried
coin.
due to the lack of a halo from the coin.
A old coin at 8" will not be a problem for you when you pass over one.

Explorers hate two things, air space between the target and the coil (with ground below) and freshly disturbed soil, both will kill depth. The Explorer uses the ground to gain depth, but disturbing the ground fouls this up. Go check out my X1 probe story on Sunray's website for an airspace example.
Or ask Ed (Upstate) to comment about depth comparisons we made between the DFX and Explorer on old coins still in the ground, the Explorer put a beating on the DFX depth wise.

Unless you detector is broken I don't believe it. You must be pulling my leg or something.

Very true what has been posted below. I have found plenty of coins at 8 inches and then tried to bury coins at same depth and nothing. Once I found a 10k bracelett detecting but once I recovered it I no loner could even detect it laying on top of the ground. Weird I know but I had a witness. A guy who use to frequent this site named Shane(Shaner) from Utah.

Ive never found ANY coin deeper than 7 inches with my machine. last year people were getting so sick of my complaining Im suprised I didnt get lynched. I also will garuntee you woulnt come up with a setting I havent all ready tried.
Alledgedly,In some locations, in some peoples hands, some of the explorers can find coins deeper than 7 inches. For some of us, all we can do is wait for the ground matrix fairys to get their halo's around the targets. Thats not exactly what minelab told me, but thats about my understanding of it. Just keep swinging ritche!

Come on over to South Carolina and I will show you hits 7 inches deep <img src="/metal/html/grin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":grin">

HUMMM, I just got a quattro and dug up a few wheat,s the other day.One of which was a good 8 or 9" down. Sen. set at 18 and running in coin mod.The soil was moist and freshly disturbed.Wheats were early 1900,s

Minelab is unique in that it sort of mixes with the ground matrix to give you excellent depth. Also remember swing slowly and try to almost scrub the ground as they hate air. Remember we are hunting coins that have been in the ground for years and not recently buried ones and once you dig that 10 inch silver dime you will know they go deep..Just a fact of life Explorers are poor at air tests or recently buried coins..

Depths differ all over the U.S. but in my neck of the woods N.E. Pa. an Explorer is a solid 10 inch plus unit on a silver dimes and one of our fellows got two english half pennies at about 15 inches.Dates were 1728 and 1729( they are a little bigger than a U.S. large cent but thinner)..So no hype about Explorers they do go deep...

If your coin garden is not at least several years old, the Explorer will not pick up deep coins. Your machine is a wonderful machine for old sites of undisturbed ground. That is where the explorer will shine. The older the better. It will not work as deep in a disturbed ground matrix....such as freshly plowed fields, construction sites etc. I didn't say as well, just not as deep as usual because many of those sites have plenty of freshly moved shallow targets and a lot of trash to weed through. The one time this doesn't hold true is ground where the top 4-6 inches have been scrapped off and the remaining soil is undisturbed. You will still find some deeper targets because the immediate matrix/halo around the coin/relic is still intact for at least several inches.

EX2 kick --- it will go 10" on a dime I have dugem 12" and my buddy about ---- so what they say about depth is very true
