you are drawing, I was 18, the year was 1972, the month was July, the place was MCRD, Marine Corp Recruit Depot in San Diego, California.
We were 10 weeks into boot camp out've 13, it was time for us young Marines to dress up in our dress blues and take our graduation pictures for when we headed home for a week after boot camp.
The next week, week 11 I was told to report to the battalion commander's office, there I was along with six other recruits from our battalion sitting on hard chairs outside this office that was full of Navy fellas all dress up in their pretty white uniforms with two Marines dressed in full dress blues.
When they called me into the room I had no idea what I did wrong or why I was there, one of the Marines dressed in full dress blues stood up and said, private Moheit, remember, the Marine Corp needs you and the department of the Navy needs you also and your country needs you now, sit down private, so I did
Then this Navy fella stood up and said, private Moheit, the department of the Navy and the United States Marine Corp would like to use your photo for recruitment, I didn't understand what he was saying so I stood up and asked, sir, private Moheit doesn't understand what the department of the Navy and Marine Corp are asking me. With that the other Marine dressed in full dress blues stood up and said, zhit for brains, they want to use your photo, are you a Marine or not private.
I replied sir yes sir, the private is a Marine, just not sure why I am here sir.
Then another one of those fancy dressed Navy officers stood up and said private, we want to use your photo for recruitment, if you agree just sign here, if not don't worry, your still a Marine, if you need to talk to some one first before making your decision you have 24 hours and access to a phone at your platoon's duty office, your staff Sargent and platoon leader and along with your DI'S know this, make your call if you need to.
Well Hannah, I did make that call to my dear ole Dad
He said Ray, I told you when you left to never sign anything before you read it and understand what your signing, I will tell you to follow your heart son, go with your gut feeling but try and understand what you are signing and doing, good or bad son.
Man, my dear ole dad sure knew his stuff and I miss him so dearly because he is my only hero in life, he wasn't perfect but he was my dad and I now understand what he was saying for all those years.
Hannah, I never signed that piece of paper because I was to young at 18 to make that big decision, I kept hearing my dads words and I am thankful for that. Would have been proud to be the poster boy for the Marine Corp if they would have picked me but I'm happy with my decision, now you get to draw my youth again
Thanks Hannah and don't listen to that dang Elson, he eats raw crawdads first thing in the morning, image that
