Did you ever find out why your GQ was always just sounding off? I'm having the same problem and I'm getting reading to ship mine back so Mr. Bill so he can check it out. I just e-mailed Paul who lives a couple of hours away to see if he will take a look at it before I send it out.

hey randy,
have you tried increasing the pulse rate? i hear that you have to increase the pulse rate/delay whenever your pi goes crazy. my whites pi I think is set at 20 or 30. your goldquest goes to 10 which is good for gold. but this makes things more complicated. an analogy would be like running high compression italian engines vs. a smooth running toyota. both engines will work but in certain situations the italian job will shine, in others it will overheat. i forget at this moment what the symbol is for the pulse rate.
i got advice that 10 wont work on all situations and you may actually have to contend with pulse rates closer to the whites.

I'll bring the GQ along on Saturday and will give it another try.

Hi Randy,
It is not uncommon for PI's to be noisy in some congested areas. This type of detector is extremely sensitive to outside interference.
You might try varying the delay just a little and see if the noise problem gets better or worse. Sometimes just a very small adjustment can make a really big difference. If it does get better or worse, then external noise is probably the culprit. such noise generators do not have to be that close to cause big problems.
Is the detector still noisy way out away from typical "city" noise? This is about the best test that can be done.
One other thing you might try if you are using NiMh's or other rechargeables is to try a fresh set of Alkalines and see if the noise reduces.
Finally, I have found there seems to just be noisy days. By this I mean, some days the detector is noisy and on others it is not. I still haven't figured out the source of the noise, but I have pretty well concluded the noise is external and nothing can be done about it.
I would be curious as to the results of your tests if you decide to try to vary the delay a little, or try different batteries.

If set to slow in some salt, and mineralization conditions, it could be contributing to your problem.
Mr. Bill

I've had similar experiences with my Goldquest, but satisfied myself 100% that the detector was operating perfectly, and that outside power sources are to blame.
I know for a fact that the following will cause the detector to sound off (often it is a target noise or just interference):
1. Overhead aircraft, especially the Perth-Johannesburg 747 <img src="/metal/html/shocked.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":shock">
2. Power surges from nearby fridges/freezers at beach kiosks
3. People using mobile/cell phones
4. People using CB radios
5. The newly based submarine fleet over here in Western Australia. When they surface out to sea (you can see them easily), I will pack up or wait until they are over the horizon.
I've yet to have detector interference that I haven't found a cause for.
Regards,
Tony.

Hi Randy,
I haven't received an e-mail from you lately, When you do please write in on the subject line "GQ SS" otherwise I'll delete the message thinking it's scam.
As you know I've been using my Modified GQ SS at Santa Monica the past month. Our units are alike with the exception my unit has an extra filter to use when searching difficult ground conditions and uses both the mono and DD coil.
In order for my GQ SS to operate with a smooth threshold hold in this area, the Sat speed needs to be cranked over full clock wise in the LA area. You need to remember we have poor conditions here in most parts of Ca.
First try increasing the SAT speed and don't worry about losing depth, The GQ SS still gets great depth even when operating the SAT speed at maximum setting. I did a depth comparison with my three Pi units and the GQ SS still responded deeper running at full SAT over the other two units..
Second, Only when the SAT speed isn't enough, Like Bill says try increasing the delay a hair just enough to quiet down the machine. NOT too muchg or you'll lose the gold.
I would like to meet with you to compare our units, I'll show you what I've learned with my unit and how it's outperforming my Headhunter Pi and another Pi I just built. Of all the pi's I've owned the GQ SS is my best pi on depth.
Let's keep in touvh,
HH, paul (Ca)

Hi Bill,
You're right! My project HH Pi detector accepted the 11" GQ SS coil and operates well on dry land, Now just need to test out in the wet surf.
Thanks for taking the time to speak with me this early evening, I'm looking forward to completing the DD coil mod on the HH PI.
Thanks again,
HH ,Paul (Ca)

No,will you post what you find out.there is a guy.in FL, With a NEW Force detector designed by Eric that does the same thing. He calls it pulseing. He said that he lower-ed +5 cap,it helped. but still has a threshold problem.
Monk.

I am the guy in FL.If your PI.Is going off/on as if detecting a steady target, its pulseing.with Regs help for about a year,I was unable to stope it.if you dont have a defected battery connector.some thing is brakeing down inside the detector.might be a Cap.who knows. if it under warrenty send it back.
Frank.

Hi Paul, good to hear from you.
I think I've found the problem. I went to install new batteries and the metal tab on the battery connector that connects to the battery holder came off. If the connection wasn't good could this have caused the GQ to keep sounding off like there was a target? I need to find an electrician to replace the battery connector. I hope this takes care of the problem.
Let's pick a day to meet after I have the GQ fixed, either a beach up here or a beach closer to you so you can compare the two GQ's. Do you think if I take the GQ to any electrician they could replace the batter connectors?
Randy

Hello Randy,
I can temporary replace the battery connector when we hook up and if an outlet is available resolder a new battery lead, I'm sure Mr. bill will allow the unit to be repaired by us while still keeping the warranty in place. "How about it Bill" Can we replace the battery lead or can Randy have the unit worked on by a professional.
Randy, Let's meet in the Santa Monica area just south of the pier, I usually park near the first bathroom in the parking area south of the pier. I take Pico going west and turn left going south on Ocean blvd. for about two blocks to the stop sign, Make a right going down the hill into the parking lot near the bathroom.
Any day this weekend is good since I'm off the weekend, I do need to compare both our units and see if there's a difference on the SAT speed applied for this beach. I'll let you use my unit for a while if you need to compare both machines.
I'll also use my Headhunter pi project to compare against our GQ SS units, I'm hoping it comes in close on performance.
Did you receive my e-mail?
HH, Paul (Ca)

Just clip off the battery connector, at the connector.
Purchase new one at Radio Shack.
Purchase heat shrink tubing sized to fit wires also.
Solder new battery clip on using heat shrink tubing to insulate wires.
Doing it this way, one does not need to pull circuit board out of the case, and work on it. Far less chance of problems.
Just be carefull on what you do. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
Mr. Bill

One other point; if you heat shrink the tubing, do not let any heat get on to the plastic electronics box. This will melt quite readily and not be covered by warranty. One way of doing it is to hold the wires as far out from the box as you can and hold over, but not touching, a soldering iron. This should give enough heat to shrink the tubing. Rotate the tubing to give an even shrink.
Eric.

If I were you I send it back, let Mr bill change the battery connector and check it out. if something goes wrong.and you blow a IC.YOU MIGHT get blamed for it.
Frank.
