Hi and Happy new year to all. I have been reading some posts and replies in here and decided to join.
I have been hunting the dry sand beaches for about 2 years now, but want to migrate into the surf and wet sand.
I have been contemplating buying either a Garrett Sea Hunter Mk II, a Detector Pro Wader or a Fisher 1280x Aquanaut.Also the Tesoro Tiger Shark.These are within my price range.Which is the best for salt water hunting???

Any suggestions / good points versus bad points on any of these.
Which would you reccomend??

Hi sand dollar and welcome aboard. Here's my thoughts. Are you planning on ever going into deeper water such as wading or even diving. If not, perhaps you don't need a full fledged water machine. I hunt the wet beach sand all winter long in NH. My choice is the Minelab Explorer ll as it works awesome in wet/dry beach sand as well as on land. This give me a "two for one" deal. Just something to think about as far as getting a machine that serves a dual purpose. Sorry I am not familiar with the machines you mentioned. I'm sure others here can help you out with that. Welcome, Sand Dollar, I'm new around here too but I've been detecting for about 28 years, mostly relics and beach. I have to echo what the others have said about Minelab. I have an Explorer II and it is indeed an awesome machine, just can't take it into the water. I also have a Fisher CZ-20 that is pretty good but I really prefer the Minelab so I just ordered an Excalibur. I was contemplating a PI machine but after talking with someone I tried a little experiment today. I went out and searced in all metal mode with the CZ-20, acted like I was using a PI and dug everything. Now I'm sure the PI will give better depth than the CZ but the test told me that I would be spending huge amounts of time digging trash. True, those great finds would be there but I just don't want to waste all that time on the trash. BTW, todays hunt yeilded all of 75 cents clad and about 35 pieces of ferrous junk. Not to criticize those who use the PI's as I'm sure they get their share of great finds. They are just working harder than I want to. Have a good one.

How about looking at the PI PRO from Whites? Its my detector of choice although I wouldn't want to use it on the dry sand... I'm strictly a water hunter and fairly new at it, almost 7 months...

The Detector Pros are pretty good as well as the Fisher model you mentioned. You can always get a VLF for the dry sand and a PI for the wet..

These are my finds in 7 months of detecting the water here in Connecticut.

The Seahunter 2 reads wave in shallow water.The tiger and 1280 chatter in salt water.The head hunter if the vlf model will also chatter. If you have chatter or a wave reading problem you will not hear mid or deep target. A PI like Whites pi Pro will be good on small and or deep targets. It also will run smooth. If depth is not a big thing the Whites Beachhunter ID is a good starter. The pi will go deeper but you will dig more junk like every iron target. The Fisher CZ20 is good but isnow disco. from the market. Then you have the best in my books is the Minelab Excalibur 800 or 1000. You will by for it but it also will pay for itself quicker then most machine.Gold is over 540 a troy ounce so scrap is about 14 dollars a pennywieght. A 100 pennywieght of 14K you paid the machine off. The adverage band wieghts 3 to 4 DWT or pennywieght. Keep asking question,Hunterjoe
 
Thanks to all for the welcome and all the advice. I carefully considered all the advice offered and did some research of my own on review sites etc.
Here's what I decided:
Since I have a machine that works well in the dry sand and I want one for wading in the sea and wet sand.I was looking at a Maximum price of $700.00 plus shipping.

The Excal is out of my price range for a machine that I will use maybe 3 days per month.

Reviews on the Detector Pro wader seem to indicate frequent service is required to maintain the waterproofing etc of the unit.

The Whites Beach Hunter ID is reported to be noisy in the sea.But is good on the wet sand - thats only 1/2 of what I want.

The Fisher 1280X is also seen as noisy in the water and CZ-#'s are discontinued.

That left a decision between the Garrett Sea Hunter Mk II and the Whites Surf Master PI Pro.I understand that I will dig a lot of junk on the beach :detecting:; but I dont plan on using it there.The surf in my neck of the woods should be relatively free of iron...hopefully..:unsure:

I decided to go with the Whites. Placed an order yesterday.
 
SEE MY FINDS FROM THIS WEEKEND.. THE BEACH HUNTER ID WILL RUN WITH THE BEST.I ALSO USE A WHITES PI UNIT FOR WET SAND/WATER HUNTING.
 
DON'T KNOW WHY IT WOULD RUN NOISEY UNLESS THE SENSITIVITY AND GROUND BALANCE WERE SET WRONG.ITS A GREAT DETECTOR THAT SEEMS TO GET A LOT LESS RESPECT THAN IT DESERVES.IF YOU RUN IT IN THE WATER THE ID LIGHTS REALLY HELP YOU FIND GOOD TARGETS WITH EASE.IN ALL METAL YOU DON'T HAVE TO SWING COIL FAST IT WORKS GREAT SLOW.PLUS YOU CAN STILL ID TARGET BY LIGHTS. I ALSO HAVE A WHITES PI UNIT THEY GET CRAZY DEPTH ON THE BEACH I HUNT BUT IRON CAN BE AN ISSUE!!LOBSTER TRAP SCRAPS!!
 
PI detectors mostly run better in wet salt conditions. The Excalibur is the best overall and can also be used on land and also has discrimination. Dollar wise , the White's PI Pro or Headhunter PI are the best for those conditions.
