Hip waders? Who wears them?

I just got permission to hunt a large fresh water sand beach. But the water is too cold for me here in Missouri. I was looking at Bass Pro for some hip waders. It looks like about $80.00 for a decent pair. What do you cold water hunters use? I know this is a beach forum question. But I wanted to ask here first.

i think a wet suit is the go for that kind of detecting you"ll be able to detect deeper were most of the rings are & not have to worry about falling over & having the waders fill with water.

I don't know if I'm ready for a wet suit. It might be to "form fitting" Maybe if I had a larger package I would slip one on!

I use waders, but I would shop around. I think you can probably get a better price then that price you got quoted. Don't worry about insulated ones. Just wear a pair of sweat pants over your jeans if you get cold. Also get a pair of neoprene gloves to keep your hands somewhat warm. My PVC non-insulated chest waders have lasted me at least 7 years, and can easily be repaired with a tire repair kit. I have patched mine twice.

If the water gets a couple degrees from freezing like it does around here at this time of year, you don't want to wear a wet suit. Hypothermia can set in quickly and really cause problems if you are out in the water.

Thanks John. They had some non insulated ones there too for about $30.00. Should I get the ones with the boots built in?

YES...get the ones with the boots attached. You might want to get a larger size as you may want to wear thick socks in them.

... and wear two pair of insulated long johns and socks. When you get doused and water goes in (as inevitably happens with waders) get out of the water right off. Put on your back up long johns and go back to it.

I usually use chest waders in this area.
Considered getting a insulated dry suit ,expensive at a few grands.
Would have to find a gold/diamond ring worth 5 or 6 grand to pay for it:sadwalk:

I use a Wet Suit , and a set of dive booties - 3.5 mm here in southern ca, the avg winter time of our Sea is low 50's

khouse i would recogmend neopreme waders for 2 reasons. #1 they are warmer! #2 they float, so if you ever do have a flooding accident they float! i also have a farmer john wetsuit and i put the top on over my waders. this keeps me warm and prevents accidental flooding. if i do happen to get into water over the top of my waders it takes a little while for water to actually get into waders. i have stepped off into deeper water quite often and quickly retreated to water that wasn't over the top of my waders without any water entering my waders. worst case senario some water does get into my waders they act just like a wetsuit.

i bought my wetsuit on ebay for $25.00 and got the waders for $30.00 there also.

becareful! cold water doesn't take long to lower your body temp to dangerous levels.

hope this helps

steve :)

Good advice.

Neoprene chest waders with integral boots. Long Johns under my jeans. Tire patch kit in the car. Neoprene gloves. Water resistant coat. I'm going to look like a big inner-tube with a head floating in the water.
