Hit a deer last night...

coming home from my first metal detecting meeting. I am still on my permit so I was riding with my mom when it happened. I was going around a turn where there is a really big bank and I didn't even have time to react. The deer jumped off the bank and right on the hood of the car. Messed it up pretty good. I pulled over a little ways down the road and the two cars that were behind me pulled over and asked if my mom and I were ok. The one guy said that that deer had to have flown a good 15 feet in the air then it landed and just walked away. I went to use the phone at a house to call my dad and he came and picked us up. The radiator blew and the power steering was gone but we managed to get it home. But besides that, the meeting was pretty cool. It is the first meeting we have has and we had about 12 people that went. We still have to come up with a name for our club. Any suggestions? lol. Well I better get going. Here are some pics of the car.

p.s. I'm glad my Bills license plate didn't get damaged up or bent. GO BILLS!!!

About 2 or 3 yrs ago about 2 miles from my house a family from out of state and visiting relatives hit a dear and it went through the windshield and killed the wife in the passenger seat and critically injured a 12 yr old boy in the back seat. Good Luck Bill

You got it done at an early age. Good thing noone got hurt. I didnt smack my first (and second) deer til I was about 29.

I've worked nights since i was 21 & commuted 20 miles to & 20 miles from work (half of that on lonely highways out in the boonies) in the dark. I was always wary about hitting deer & came very close a number of times. Then.... that fateful rainy morning at 5:30 am , on the way home from work .... I hit 2 deer at once on a highway. Yep.... 2 at once. It was drizzling rain that morning so I had already slowed down because of it. I was driving my old 1989 full-sized Ford Bronco when I saw 2 deer step out into the road ,nearly side by side. I put on the brakes , but didnt stomp on them hard because I didnt want to slide or lose control on the wet pavement. I turned into the empty oncoming lane to avoid hitting the deer when both deer walked into that lane...... couldnt avoid hitting them. I figured that I slowed down to about 35 mph when I basically ran over their hindquarters. The impact pushed in my chrome bumper (and a small body panel under my headlight) a bit & mangled my front license plate. Other than that there was no other damage. Another good reason to own a BIG SUV. ;)

I now own a small Jeep wrangler & dread to think what would happen if i hit a deer with it. :look:

I am extremely wary now of hitting deer . I even use what I call a "deer shield" which is basically what I call the driver in front of me. During deer season I get behind another vehicle (at a safe distance) & allow them to take the hit.... IF a deer runs out in front of them in the dark. I just watch for their brake lights to come on to tell me if there is a deer ahead (especially on the side of the road). It works reasonably well.
