my ACE250 is feeling a bit neglected this week as i"m leaning a new toy ( an underwater detector ) so i took the ACE & my boy with his new ACE ( thanks Mick ) out & hit 3 lots i found $16 & a silver lock from a bracelet my boy found a 20c coin.
my ACE was having fits, when we got within 15-20 foot of each other it would start beeping consistently until i moved away my boys ACE was fine, have any of you guys had this problem & is there a way to fix it as i"d love to hunt smaller tot lots with my son without having to worry about how close i am.

I'm amazed how much you pull outta totlots Lazy. I've tried a few in my area with minimal return. Those kids must be loaded in Melbourne:crazy:

If you are beating up play equipment with your Ace, Then that is neglect! Little wonder it feels neglected.
Actually, because both Aces are on the same frequency, they are interfering with each other. This is called cross talk.

From the land ofthe Bluenose.....that is a common occurrence with Garretts ofthe same model. Glad you got out and made it a family affair. What type of swishing machine you git m8?

That would be the ever-annoying crosstalk!! You should try it at a competion hunt with 100 or so folks in a 300' x 300' area!! Will drive you nuts!! Some of Garretts upper end machines have the ability to change the frequency so that you can hunt with other people, but sadly, not the 250. In fact, machines of different barands will cross-talk with Garretts too. Rule of thumb is stay at least 50 feet from each other when detecting. Even if you don't HEAR any interference, they could be degrading each others signal and you could be missing valuable targets.

Bigcat said it all; unless you have a machine that allows frequency switching, spread it out some. Years ago when my dad and I got into detecting we each purchased a Garrett Freedom 1 and found out quickly the same thing - cross talk. Put some space between yourself and your son where you can still watch him if he's young. The good news is by spreading out you can cover more territory as a father/son team and hopefully find more items, we sure did and still had fun together. If you find a nice little honey hole turning up signals, call your son over to hunt it while you try another area within sight. Giving him the opportunity of quick success will surely keep him interested.

BTW until he knows exactly what are keepers and what are junk, tell him to keep everything. I almost found this out the hard way; was digging what I thought were .410 shotgun brass and put them into my junk bag. Fortunately I didn't throw the junk bag away and later found out they were actually CW era Spencer carbine casings.

Kudos for finding an interest you can share with your son; best of luck and HH.

Nice finds Lazy. I love hitting totlots with my kids. Congrats

thanks for the replies  sounds like i"ll have to hit some big tot lots :heh: to keep the chatter down.
my boy loves finding those $2 nuggets when he"s out hunting it wont be long & he"ll be kicking dads ar$$. i got him using the sniper coil last time out but he wants to use the standard coil as it covers more ground & he reckons finds more loot.
Leslie the new detector is a minelab Excalibur & i"v got first gold within the first week also found 6 silver so it"s going well so far

Yeah that's the old crosstalk problem. Unfortunately the 250 doesn't have a frequency adjustment like the higher end Garretts. A guy sells a frequency changer for detectors if I can find his name, that would eliminate that problem.

When my wife and I took our Ace's out for the first time. We got "too close to each other" and both units went nuts! Wide eyed I looked up and she wide eyed was looking all around. Freaked us both out. I thought a UFO had locked onto us or something:razz:

We soon figured out what was going on and stayed away from each other from then on. About 12' or less and all hell will break loose of course I think also it depends on how your settings are as well we were at 4-6 that day.
