Well folks here I am looking to buy a detector (again). As some of you all know I have been a long time Tesoro swinger, great detectors but wanting to try something different this comming season. $$$ is a big issue with me, I can only afford one detector, I sold the one I had last December to help out with Christmas gifts. My boss (oops Wife) promised me that I could buy a detector with some of our tax return money, I will be getting my return soon. I done lot of reviewing, etc. and decided that a Minelab Musketeer would make me a good detector for what I do (coin/jewelry hunt on land never beach). Sure is hard finding a used one in my price range, but I did find one. I was pretty set to tell the fella I will take it (still might) but had a monkey wrench thrown into the mix. I have a dealer that I know that has a White's M6 that he will sell me at about the same price as the Musketeer. To be honest I have always wanted to try a M6 over the years but never had the $$$. I know this is a White's forums but know you all are good folks here & will give me an honest opinion of what I should do. If you rather answer in private (I won't repeat anything) please get in touch with me at my email address sprice@premierwireless.us Thanks! Steve.

I'd go with the M6.

more Tesoro-like in response and recovery than is the Minelab. It's a silent-search detector, like the Tesoro discriminators. However, it has superior depth of detection than a Tesoro; will work better at a moderate-to-fast sweep in more mineralized environments than a Tesoro; has a superior visual Target ID display and information than any current Tesoro; and an excellent, quick-acting Auto-Trac circuit to establish and maintain a good functional Ground Balance than most of your Tesoro's. The nice thing is you can get a good GB and then 'lock' that setting for superior performance in hot rock or iron-infested sites.

Hi Skiwhiz,if you ask which one to choose on the minelab forum everybody will say choose the musketeer.....there lies your problem......everybody is biased to their particular brand. The truth of the matter is this....both these machines will find the good targets, there really will not be any difference in performance between the two.I've owned an m6 and i agree with what has been said here.....they are cracking machines,in fact,i believe if everything is taken into consideration, including the price, the m6 is one of the best machines yet made. But the musketeer is just as capable and you would not be disappointed with either machine....it really boils down to the choice of having a screen or not.Whichever you choose you're onto a winner.

I know what you are saying but I have been around long enough to know that this is not always true. I know that oldbob55 and Monte would give good honest advice what ever forum they are on. Appreciate all the feedback and I am really leaning towards the M6. Thanks! Steve.

Well I own a Minelab (Sovereign GT) and a Whites QXT Pro and have owned most of the machines out there. Since my bias would seem to be neutral on Whites/Minelab I'd say get the M6 and not the Musketeer. Once you get used VDI #s and tone alerts you'll never want to have a detector without them again. Yea, most say don't rely on the meter and I mostly won't on my machines, but I always find myself checking the target on the screen as my final say to dig or not. It's one more piece of information that you can use, especially in heavy trash where a certain piece of junk may sound the same as a good target but the VDI shows it's not. If you split hairs on rings by avoiding the common trash numbers at that site and digging everything else that sounds good you'll lower your trash to ring ratio. Sometimes it's the only realistic way to hunt in very heavy trash, unless you plan to spend a life time digging each and every signal from a particular site loaded with junk.

From what I've read online as well as heard from local hunters the MXT (and thus the M6 as well) is one heck of a machine for gold ring hunting. I know of a local guy who only does this with his MXT at parks and such and always seems to be finding the good stuff. I'd prefer my GT's VDI and depth on rings most of the time, but a nice light M6 seems to be the perfect fit on those days when I don't want to deal with the less user friendly GT hardware. Some days you are just in the mood to use a Whites. Minelabs have the peformance but not the "feel" of a Whites in certain respects that I miss sometimes. My QXT Pro is a deep coin shooter but it lacks VDI numbers to split hairs on rings.

By the way, I find that tone alerts are the most useful tool for me on detectors. For instance, I almost always hunt with my QXT without using any discrimination. I listen for high tones and when I find those I refer to the screen. You get used to ignoring the lower tone targets and with no discrimination you'll get maximum depth and less chance of masking targets. I can assign a high, low, or all metal tone to any of the 8 zones on the QXT. It's a powerful tool to have, but with the higher number of tones on the M6 or my GT you have even more information to work with.

Thanks Critterhunter, that was a nice post with some great info. Steve.

Good selection of coils available for the M6, MXT etc. I have an MXT - the one thing I'd especially like is the tone id on the M6 which the MXT does not have. Coming from beep and dig machines, i agree with critterhunter in that I listen first, then glance at the display to help determine whether to dig or not. I especially like the visual ID when detecting in areas where I'd prefer to dig as little as possible due to pristine turf. The Whites display on this line of detectors is pretty accurate in relation to coins.

Ok folks I am going to hold you all responsable for finding lots of coins & jewelry this comming summer, I told the dealer I will take the M6. As stated I have used mainly Tesoro's over the years, I did have a White's Eagle II SL for awhile and found it to be the deepest detector that I have ever had & even though a tid isn't a big deal to me, it was very accurate. Will the M6 be similar to the Eagle when it comes to depth and tid accuracy. Thanks! Steve.

P.S. I like the idea of dials on the M6 instead of pushpads.

I think you will be very pleased with the M6 Steve.

where is the best place ONLINE to click buy now that shows a price?

http://whiteselectronics.com/matrix-m6.html

Better prices often can be negotiated with your dealer or in the classifieds though.

Thanks, but didnt want too pay retail, nor pay high taxes. Guess I wont be buying a new white's anytime soon.(Other than maybe another CoinMaster) I have 2 dealers in my area NEITHER carry anything in stock. no coils, covers, detectors or pinpointers.

Give the sponsers of our forum a shot. Never know till you talk to them, and those guys are nice to deal with.
Best,
John
