Hog jawl and blackeye peas for tomorrow?

Hank68

Well-known member
Here in Alabama we have a new years dinner tomorrow, smoked hog jawl and blackeyed peas who else does the same thing that we do? Lisa knows what I'm talking about!

Its a tradition that's been going on here for years to start the new years, how it started I have no clue, do a goggle search and it should explain, but hey no worries mate Happy new year!

Sounds like an interesting tradition but most of us northern boys like steak done medium well, with green beans, mashed potatoes, gravy and home made biscuits. Oh ... and don't forget the bread pudding for desert. :clapping:

Sounds good SS we might have start a new tradition!

Hank, I know EXACTLY what you're talking about! We will be having our meal at my aunt's house this evening at 5:00. Hog jowl (actually, it's backbone here for us, but we call it hog jowl), black eyed peas, turnip greens, cornbread, sweet taters (that I wont eat), corn, and left over cakes and pies from Christmas Day. Can't wait to get there and throw down!

We had steak & taters last night. :)

I had some blackeyed peas a few minutes ago over at my inlaws. I have always liked blackeye peas.

I knew you would know about that Lisa , we just arrived back home from the inlaws had a great time needless to say that I'm stuffed! HHH

It's interesting to read the various celebratory ideas here.

In Oz, as far as our family goes anyway, we do not have any traditional food at the New Year.

In fact I don't recall hearing of anything like this here.

But Christmas dinner is another matter. That is our celebration.

In our family it is roast beef and pork with roasted vegetables of all types, Christmas pudding, custard and ice cream.

However other families here traditionally eat seafood at Christmas.

Somehow seafood makes a bit more sense as it is mid summer here but, despite that, we stick with a roast.

As long as we remember the true meaning of Christmas then all the rest doesn't matter all that much.

Sounds good to me, I could do seafood I'm open for that! Are you new here? Glad all is well in OZ! HHH

Ma knows best! Southern food is hard to beat! No impossible but tough!

I'm not really new Hank. I do read a lot of posts on here but I just don't comment all that much.
