Honest Un-Biased Help Needed

Okay, here's my situation. I am looking for a good inexpensive metal detector that would be good for gold both fresh and salt water, afterall, gold is where the money's at! Also if the detector will hit on gold easily silver shoudn't be a problem. Many companies claim their's are the best, the deepest etc. It is difficult to decide. After reading many posts on different forums I am still not sure which way to go. Minelab seems to have the best recovery but they are pretty pricey. I just talked to a Garrett dealer and he made a good honest point. Most coins etc. are found within a 4" depth and the Ace 250 will do approx. 9" so what are you really paying for if you consider a DFX at 1000.00 vs. a 200.00 Ace 250?, a graph that is going to show you what you will most likely dig anyway? Or a GTI 2500 etc. I see many people use the Ace 250 some as primary, some as secondary. It seems most gold would be found on the beach, low tide, with maybe more in the water. Is there a good detector that will work both fresh water streams and the salt water? I see each company seems to have a different detector for each application. The Ace 250 seems to have good reports even among other brand users and should be okay for multi-purpose but what detector will serve best for the gold fresh and salt water? Should it be waterproof? I appreciate any help!

I use a fisher 1280X-it was around$600.00-Works GREAT in the fresh water-Thats all I use it in,but Ive heard its kinda unstable in the salt water;I dont know about all the others....

BTW I love your avatar

RE: Salt Water= I think most medium priced detectors will work ok in dry sand. The wet sand and in the water the mineralization affects the detector. I have used my CZ5 in salt water but it has a switch for salt and normal. I use a CZ20 for water hunting and of course that one isn't cheap. Hope this well help a little. There are quite a few on here who hunt salt water beaches so maybe you can get some more details. Hi and welcome.

Tim - If you want results to speak for the machine then I will say that my Fisher 1266 X has given me about 170 solid gold items and many silver ones in the last 6 years. I really know the machine as I dont jump from one to another. I have used it on the beach a few times and it gives no trouble. Good luck on your search , steve in so az

Thanks to all who replied here! So much to learn and Spring approaching! Very nice Forum, I am learning a lot, just want my first purchase to have no regrets. I read where a new buyer bought the DFX but was quite disappointed after reading the posts about Whites. I have heard many positive things about Whites with customer service etc., but have heard the DFX didn't perform that well at the beach (saltwater). I appreciate all the input I get and will check out each model suggested. Thanks again as you are the folks using these things not selling them!

I believe the Cadillac of water machines for fresh and salt water is the Fisher CZ-20. I would have to say that most serious water hunters use one.
Hard to beat!

God bless!

if you want a serious water machine get a serious water machine so you wont worry about dropping a non waterproof machine in the water. look for the lightest weight water machine as some are a little heavy.(just an idea).

Is there a big difference between the CZ20 to CZ21? I looked at Kelly Co and couldn't find a CZ20 to compare with. Thanks

is the new version of the 20. I wouldn't buy from K-@#$% :(

I HAVE A CZ-20 ALL ORINGINAL PARTS---THE NEW CZ-21 ARE MADE W/CHINESE PARTS ---THERE IS A NEW CZ-20 STILL IN THE BOX AT METAL DETECTORS--- ON THE EAST COAST IN .MAINE OR MATT.VERNT ON THE DEPOT JUST SOLD ONE FOR $467.THE TOP TWO WATER DETECTORS FOR FRESH & SALT WATER ARE THE # 1-EXCALIBER # 2-CZ-20.THEY ARE OUT THERE ,JUST SAW A EXCALIBER ON THE DEPOT?--------LOL---------BILL

Thanks! Sounds like the CZ20 may be the one if I could find those prices! The excal would be nice but I may end up in trouble trying to justify the price to wifey! Okay, I seen a comment on where not to buy, would love to hear more about that as I was thinking of the Ace 250 Sport Package for wifey and the water one for me. Where would be a good trusted place to buy that would offer or match the "Big Store" prices? Look forward to hearing back on this one as I am near purchase time! Just another note, a local Garrett dealer has just offered me a Whites Surfmaster PI, it is not the Pro model, I am trying to determine it's age, he gave me a serial number and I called all three of Whites service centers but no-ones home! Waiting to hear back. The dealer guarantees the machine and originally suggested approx. 300.00 but just called back and I think he will do better. Any thoughts on this Detector? Comparing to the Excal and CZ20 what are my losses of function and performance? Thank

that is one of my machines..nice. It is light in weight, uses just 4 AA batteries, the coil is longer than wide making it better for covering a little larger area on each sweep over that of the usual round coil, it provides good depth too...I once found a 00 (double aught) buckshot BB from a shotgun shell down to 9 inches!

I have used it to find a property marker as well for our township. Took only a couple minutes to locate it. Lots of nice features...pretty much turn on and go....sugges though you get a set of headphones with volume control as there is none on the 250 to adjust. Learning curve is easy.

Great machine. I would use it all the time but in fairness after spending the $$$ for a Minelab Explorer II I have to learn to use it. I do use it though when I am traveling because it is easy to pack, quick to grab and do a quick search. I had an older Garrett GTAx 1250 to compare this machine with. Other than more options on the 1250 (more notches representing items), the 250 gives the 1250 a run for the money. If you have a choice for a 250 or a Walmart Bounty Hunter.....definitely the 250 is the answer that will provide you with more satisfaction.

My wife bought mine from a fellow detecting club member and owner of Prostock Detectors in Plainwell, MI. I'd trust him with my wallet and my family if that makes for a good referral..Mike from MI probably has his phone number if you need it.

Thanks Pete, sounds good! I have heard a lot of good things about the 250, there's not better insight than from those of you who are in the field with them!

Hi Semperfi61, Where is this Alan at Pro Stock located, any web-site? Thanks
