Hooray!! Finally found my first Indian head penny!!!

Wow! Who would have expected the beautiful weather we had this past weekend in the greater Cleveland area!! Temps in the mid to high 60's. Loved it!

The weather gave Rob and I a great opportunity to metal detect a couple of parks we have been wanting to try. The first day, I had to admit that I was a little disappointed we didn't find much of anything just some clad and one wheat penny. We expected that to be a potential prime spot.

The second day we went to an old park and metal detected from 9 am until about 6 pm. The forecast said rain all day so we thought we would get an early start. However, the rains never came....ended up being a beautiful day. Between the both of us, we found a decent amount of clad coins. Rob found a beautiful 1944 Mercury dime and a 1943 silver quarter. I was kind of bumming out because he trumped my 1949 silver Roosevelt dime and 3 wheats. ha ha. But not to fear, as dusk was approaching, I decided to dig a nice sounding tone that I suspected to be a 7" deep wheat penny. I figured what the heck, I might win in the wheat penny category when we compare our finds for the day. To my surprise, this wheat penny was playing tricks on my eyes, I kept trying to make out the front and thought could this be an Indian head. Nah...every time I think that, it never is. So, I turned it around to see if I could see the memorial image or wheat penny design --- whoa --- when I saw the "one cent" mark exactly lke IHPs have... I was like "Yes Yes Yes!!" and I did the Rocky Balboa hands up in the air cheer as Rob was walking towards me wondering ...what did she find??? ha ha. I have been wanting to find one of these for the longest time, I think it is just the coolest coin. It is a 1902 and in pretty decent shape. So, needless to say, I am a very happy treasure hunter to say the least. I was so glad Rob was approaching right after I found it so we could share the celebratory moment together.

Still waiting to find an SLQ or a Barber quarter. I'll be pretty excited if and when I find either of those.

Happy Hunting All - I love this hobby!!!

Congratulations on your 1st IH, now the floodgates will open and more will follow in much less time. When I found my 1st IH I stood in awe as it is my favorite coin and just a beautiful design. Great start to the new year and I wish you much treasure.

I haven't found mine yet so I know how you felt. Why were you thinking a wheat penny when they come in CO 40,41,42 and Indians come in the 30's? What were the numbers on yours if I may ask.

You're right...the numbers were just odd. I can't even recollect exactly what they were but the tone and depth is what got my attention and wheats can have strange readings so I don't always pay close attn to the numbers. However, after I got it out, I put it on top of the ground and it read 12:35. Don't think it read that when I detected it though. I wish I had paid more attention. That was my 9th hour of detecting. lol.

Ata Girl!!!!

Congratulations on your first IH penny!

Thanks for the pictures.

Congratulations on your first. Jimmy is right. Once you find your first it seems like the rest of the tribe will follow. I had one month last year where I found more IHs than I did wheats. HH

Congrats! Way to go on your first Indian, there is nothing like the excitement of a first find! I hope you find many more soon.

Congratulations! Hold on to the memory and the feeling of that first find. I found my first IH in Hunting Park on Roosevelt Blvd in Philadelphia
in July of 1985 and I still remember it like it was yesterday. Put all of your "Firsts" in coin holders (2X2's), date them and write the place found
and then put them somewhere safe. Years from now you'll be glad you did.

Yes it is nice to find that first one, it took me awhile but when Goes4ever invited me up for my first field find he said "I know you will get your first today" and sure enough he was right! Keep it up and you will find more.

Thanks everyone!! It is a fond memory for me for many reasons and I do plan to document my firsts as well as our special finds. I appreciate all the comments and responses. Very nice. It was a beautiful setting where I found it. Right by some very tall pine trees with pine needles all over the ground and I could look out onto the lower part of the park while the sun was beginning to set. Very special. HH all!!!
