Millions of Fakes

If you have a "1943 copper penny" it's most likely either copper-plated or the date has been altered from a 1945 or 48; most of the known 1943 copper cents are accounted for in collections. If it is a copper plated steel cent, it will stick to a magnet. An altered coin will probably be easily identified by comparing it to a 1943 steel cent under an 8x or 10x magnifier.

A really good fake or counterfeit may only be detected by an expert. Also, there is a great article on the subject of 1943 US cents called 'Learn the facts of '43 cents': http://www.rrcoins.net/43_Cents.htm

* One sold for $40,000 in 1958
* Another sold for $10,000 in 1981.
* A 1943-S copper cent graded NGC MS-61 Brown sold for $115,000 in 2000.
* A 1943-S copper cent graded VF-35 sold for $207,000 in 2010.

a "key date" coin, is a coin with a low mintage number. if a coin is a "key date" coin it ups the value of the coin. a for example...
1888 indian head with a mintage of 37,489,832 in G condition is worth about 75 cents to $1...now a 1877 indian head with a mintage of 852,500 in G condition is worth about $400. now, 852,200 sounds like alot, but really that's a spec for coin mintage. i would go as far as saying that any year with under 5 or 6 million is low mintage coin. hope i helped you to understand.

Thanks for the answer. I haven't checked the mintage, just glad to find anything but clad coins. What it must have been like to hunt before 1965!!!!!!!!!!
