how can i clean coins without hurting them?

Hello i was wondering if there is a way to clean pennies without ruining them i want to be able to see the year but do not want to hurt the coin or value any ideas

Soak them in olive oil,may take a few weeks, then try to clean them with a tooth brush, and wooden coctail stick.

will oil ruin them or will they still be OK and hold the value also is there any other way that wont take so long soap and water are not doing it they are still dirty and hard to see

You should be ok with this method but it does take ages!
This is should not afect the value, but a lot of colectors of valuable coins dont want them cleaned.
I dont know of any way of cleaning them without some damage, but hang on as someone else may sugest something.
Good luck with them,& if you get a result pop a photo up,love to see them.

Yeh,us brits clean our oid bronze & copper coins this way,but then we cant even elect a government! Stunning over here right now,a true shambles,if its on the news over there please dont watch it as its embarasing! lol.

Hey Geoff,
Us Yanks have always been able to elect a government , and "shambles" sounds about right over here !!.....The politicians all do very well for themselves !!

Nothing new under the sun, who's pockets are gonna get filled quicker? Oh yeah, olive oil is about the best preservative for old coppers and bronzes, wooden toothpicks work well around the dates and writing on the coins. Good luck on those elections. Ron

i agree but what about cleaning the coins any other ideas that work. looking for something that takes less time. i have some in oil now i will let you know.
