How do you properly test a used E-Trac after purchase?

Hello all,

I recently purchased a very nice used E-Trac with over a year left on the warranty from a very reputable dealer. I am not yet familiar with the model but would like to be able to know for myself if it is working as it should so that I can address any issues before the warranty expires.

Given that I am in upstate NY with frozen ground, can anyone offer any air benchmark tests or other tests that would assure me that everything is good to go.

TX,

Scott

Hi Scotty,

Well Dunne on the deal...a great machine!

Essentially, place it in a metal free environment, plastic table etc...turn it on with a long 5 second press, allow it staibilise, Noise Cancel if it is unstable, and then pass different targets across the coil and observe the target cursor, FE and CO numbers, listen to the Tones and just allow it run awhile.
All should be AOK.

Good Hunting

......duh

............for got to say....

......................................if it "hits" the targets [ cleanly ] and [ nicely ] and [ the threshold ] then reverts to the [ hummmmmmmm ] after hitting them and waits for the next target, that's a normal part of FBS operation then everything is kosher.

Des, thanks for your response. I have been detecting for almost 40 years with various machines but I must remind you that I am clueless when it comes to the etrac. First, what is "long 5 second press" mean and also please instruct me as to how I "noise cancel". Also shouldn't I be doing any test to verify performance such as a simple air test with various coins at known distances?

In addition to what Des said,
Look up the ID charts of various target metals. Then do the proverbial air test making sure the target metal is in the ballpark according to the ID charts.
If the detector can't air detect a dime at least 8 inches with a rock solid dime ID using manual sensitivity, i'd pass.
Keep in mind, these things will detect a lot deeper in soil than an air test.

Hello scotty,
The noise cancel button will be on the lower right portion of your control head, it will have a zig zag line like a heart monitor with a slash line across it.. Get the detector outside and hold it approximately 18" above the ground and press the noise cancil button..A bar will appear on your screen like you are downloading something, will take maybe 20 to 30 seconds to complete..
i would go to youtube and watch some videos of testing there..Just search minelab etrac settings, tests, patterns etc..

I haven't noise canceled in a long time ... I run channel 6 or 9 all the time without any problems and those two channels suppose to be deeper

I am in montgomery county, maybe if you are close by I can show you how it works. Let me know.

Scotty Hi,
I'm Tom and I live in Glens Falls 50 miles north of Albany. If you live not too far away I would be glad to help you out with that Etrac.
Thanks for the offer, Tom. Because I live near Syracuse, I probably won't be up in that area until the spring. I used to live in Saratoga Springs. Perhaps we could meet up for a couple hours for a quick hunt then.

Ironsight, I get what your talking about. Is there a preferred no-nonsense program or settings I should use to do these checks?

Ive been using the etrac for about 2 1/2 years now and ive gotten to the point where i just turn the thing on and start detecting. Open screen blackened out from 27 and run the manual sensitivity as high as you can. I cant even remember the last time that I noised cancelled.

Thanks for the offer, I think you are about 90 minutes away, I will keep you in mind. If it was warm out, I'd be there sooner than later.

Not easy for first time for me! More I use and more I know how to use it! I use Etrac for little over 2 years now. Found four 1800's coins ( 1864 two cents) around Chicago last year is not bad for heavy hunted park! Own coin garden is good for test! I test my machine at my coin garden very often to make sure that my machine is great shape! Various coins at various depth from 5 to 9 inch deep!
