How do you stop a Goldquest from banging on a swing?

I have proven that my second hand goldquest is OK.
Now I have to learn to set it up properly for CA black sand.
Currently, I am able to minimize banging on a swing by incrasing reject to 1/4 turn from minimum. Also I have increase SAT speed to 1/16 turn faster from medium.
Am I doing this right? Is the reject much more than what you guys are using? I guess if Min Reject is 10us and Max is 50us, I'm about 20? That doesnt look good. I may be missing outon the gold this way.
Your advice is appreciated.
Rgds, JT

Hi JT,
I am not sure about the bang on the swing but I will make a guess. You might have your coil coax loose enough that it moves during the swing. The GQ is sensitive enough to detect very minute changes and even the coax can be a problem. If it can easily move even half way up the shaft, it can cause false signals. You might try just making sure it is not free to move easily and see if that helps.

Not certain what you mean by "banging". Do you mean false signals when you sweep the coil ?? Is it just doing it on one sweep such as to the left, or to the right. Does it do it both ways ?
The coil needs to be level, and parallel to the earth. No up curves at the end of your sweeps.
The Goldquest pulse delay is from 10uS. to 40uS. But retarding it

When I swing the coil, the detector sounds off going to the left and not to the right (waves coming in from my left). I was detecting at the shoreline and it seems to be the MD reacting to the difference in water in the sand. No problem in the dry stuff. It could also be due to the uneven sand which slopes down to my left.
What will solve this with the least effect on depth and sensitivty to gold. Faster SAT speed, more REJECT or a combination of both?
JT

Leave SAT at it's fastest setting and turn up reject until falsing just about stops. This is what works for me. Beaches will change from day to day. Sometimes I can leave reject at minimum with no falsing at all, other times I must turn it up a bit, but no more than about 12 to 14. Don't worry a target will still punch through even with a little falsing. I try to leave all settings as hot as possible. Also remember you want your threshold just audible.

It sounds like it is happening because of the angle of the beach and the difference in salt content from one side to the other. Probably the easiest way to eliminate the problem while still maintaining as short a delay as possible would be to just change your search pattern. Instead of hunting parallel to the waters edge which is what it sounds like you are doing hunt from the waterline up to the high tide line and back down to the waterline, etc, etc. In this way you keep the salinity level of the beach even through the arc of your sweep. Even though the salt content will increase as you approach the water it will still remain constant for the sweep of the coil and the SAT shold be able to take up the slack of your forward movement. Hope I have explained this so that it makes sense!!!

Is it still on your left ? The false signal I mean
Mr. Bill

I cant remember if it was always on my left. By the time I turned around to head back, with the waves coming in from the right, I had already increased the SAT speed and increased REJECT.
Since I got the MD to settle down, I guess I was doing something right.
My question now would be, what is best way to set the GQ up for a black sand beach with the least effect on picking up gold rings?
SAT? REJECT? or a combination of both?
From all the posts, it appears that I should increase SAT speed first (up to FAST if necessary)before I even touch REJECT. Is this right?
Thanks.
JT
P.S. You Florida guys have it good with your white sand.

JT,
I'll share what I've learned works best for the same beach area you're searching, everyone here posted great information with helping you get the most out of your GQ
Sometimes I can operate with a 2 o'clock Sat speed at Santa Monica and the next time have to increase the Sat full clock-wise to maintain a steady threshold, California beaches are not like beaches back east, They change from one day to the next. Also, On the Northern side of the pier "Bay watch stations 13 going north, the wet sand gets very nasty from some type of interference" I've had to increase my SAT full clock-wise to smooth out the unit with even advancing the delay a hair in some areas. Even with full SAT speed the GQ still punches a hole in the sand getting the low conductors. Don't be afraid to use the SAT speed to the fullest, It's there to use. You'll hear the deep whisper signals stronger with a smooth threshold over a unstable machine trying to get more depth.
In some areas, You'll notice as you're swinging your coil heading North the unit will hold a steady threshold more so than walking south swinging your coil, In the areas the unit starts to be more radical even when you maxed out the Sat as you're heading south, change your search pattern with ending your left swing in front of your feet and then swing to the right ending your swing to the far right of your shoulder. You'll still cover almost the same amount of sand only with a different search pattern. From what Beachcomber shared, he does the same when searching beaches with odd interference such as this one.
Like what Reg said, keep your coil cable tight on the lower stem and your sand scoop away from the coil as you swing.
My GQ is different from yours and is set-up to search in difficult conditions, The extra filter "when used" makes the unit perform at any level of the worst of worst blacksand. What i've shared above is operating the GQ without the filter, So i know the GQ works well here in california.
Keep us posted,
HH, Paul (Ca)

I should not be afraid to bump up the SAT speed. Loss of depth will be minimal.
Increase SAT speed up to full before touching REJECT.
I did know wnough to fix the cable right. no problem there.
As for the threshold, I agree with Paul that it is better to have a smooth threshold than an unstable PI yet deep seeking PI. I wont be able to hear the "hmmmmm" sounds that mean deep and delicious finds thru all that banging.
I am glad I started with my surfmaster. Or else this GQ would have driven me nuts.
This GQ reminds me of italian engines. them babies are temperamental. but when they get on the pipe, theyll blow anything away.

On any saltwater beach, the ground signal will rise as you swing the coil toward the water
