How do you take a CZ 20 Apart?

I have a CZ 20 that the on/off volume control shaft has pulled out of the housing. I have removed the knobs and backing nuts but cannot see how the unit comes apart. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I sent the unit to Fisher and was quoted $593. to repair it. Needless to say I had it returned to me.

:hot:Yep, the Fisher repair bills for machines with no warranty are out of sight:rant:. Guess they don't want to mess with them.

Funny, The same knob on my CZ 20 came loose a couple months ago. I returned it for repair and had a quote even higher than yours. I was told the end cover that all the knobs are mounted to was cracked. I revmoved the bezel and could see no crack though one could have been there. That one part cost $300. My coil was replaces also as I was told it was open. The machine had been working just fine but suddenly would no longer GB. Anyway, I went ahead and had it repaired.

OK, BACK to your question. To open the Fisher CZ 20 you remove the battery from the battery compartment. In the back of that compartment you will see two strips of rubber. Under those strips are 4 screws. Those tighten the front cover. In order to open the case you will also need to loosen the penitrations for the headphone and coil wire so the entire front control stuff can be removed.

My guess is that if the knob is very loose you will have experienced some degree of moisture entry.

Let us know what you find out if you proceed with the repair.
 
Forgot to mention that my CZ 20 is working very well since being repaired. Dug up 5 gold rings on the first day out. Also the folks at Fisher were very expedient and friendly. It is a great machine so worth the expense of fixing. I had mine repaired just last month so since the change of hands.\
 
Thank you, that is just what I was looking for. After that repair estimate from Fisher, I had them send it back. They also said the case was cracked and the screws were stripped. That I know that is NOT true. Yes, there is probably salt water intrusion, but once apart I will flush the control board with distilled water, let it dry good then flush the board with electronic cleaner then again with distilled water. All I have to do now is figure out why the on/off knob pulled out and how to get it back in and sealed.
Yes the CZ 20 is worth fixing, but not for $593.00

That's just what I thought. I can buy a working one for less than that and after that quote from Fisher, I can't say I put a lot of faith in them anymore.

Yes, Fisher is way out of line. My CZ20 is in for repair right now (2nd owner) the pinpoint button quit on mine. They quoted me $800 to repair!!!! I said WHAT! Then The women told me it needed a new housing (something about something pulled out) the original pinpoint button is a $118 module board. Then as she was giving me the separate prices, she said "and the cost of a new coil".......I said wait a minute, whats wrong with my coil-this detector works. She asked if I wanted to talk to the tech? I said YES please>>>>The Tech said that there were a couple of mounting studs that were pulling out and that the detector housing may not be waterproof. I said "can't you push them back in and epoxy?" He said "Yes" I told him that will work. Then I asked him what was wrong with the coil. He told me that there was a break in the coil wire outer jacket (no wires exposed)about 6" up from coil. Then I remembered that there was a SMALL nibble were a mouse nipped at it when I had it stored at a friends house. I asked the Tech if he could "just seal it" He said he would apply NOMAX....or something like that?? * I can't remember the sealant. NOW my price is down to $280 with return insured shipping. They told me that they give an alignment to the circuit after all repairs so that is NICE. So with a little talking I was able to get things worked out for the best interest of both parties.....me mainly :)But get this crapp!! My detector may not be WATERPROOF is a statement that will haunt me for awhile. All I know was that my detector was watertight when I sent it in for repair. The pinpoint button just slowly quit making contact till it quit. I just wonder if MAYBE they broke something when they opened it up?????????
 
The intesting thing is that everyone I have heard sending a CZ 20 in for repairs recently got the same story and price for repair. Just how many CZ 20"s all have a case, coil and additional failures all at the same time. At least three of us on this forum haVE HAD THE EXPERIENCE IN THE LAST 2 MONTHS. Perhaps we need to ask that replaced parts be returned to us.
 
don't know all that much about Fisher, but all of the above sounds
like a good reason to buy a White's. (minelab-tesoro-whatever)
 
There is a difference.:shrug:

They purchased Bounty Hunter :bounty: in 1999, and turned the company around for the better. I'm sure there going to do the same for Fisher. :fisher:

I wouldn't be at all suprised that you see the comback of the CZ-20 & the CZ-5. :clap:
 
:cheers: But watch out for unneeded housing repairs.........but difficult to say if ya need one or not. YES, I would suggest to have ALL broken parts returned. Should be easy to see a FRESH break. Miss my CZ20. Won't be here till Thursday :poke: :hot: :rage: :throw:
 
Well, just got my CZ20 back from Fisher Folks for the 3rd time. Was sent in originally for pinpoint button replace (around $300) they said unit "might not be waterproof" Said had battery door screw retainers pulling out of housing (I never noticed this) also said had a "crack" in the "panel" (could not tell-is hidden in detector housing) and coil wire had a nick in it. Total for all repairs would be something like $800. !! So I just optioned to have the pinpoint button replaced. *Tech said he could seal the coil wire nick. Got the detector back and the BEZEL had slipped (while silicon dried) and was crooked. So I sent it back in.(Fisher wasn't quite sure what I was trying to explain-so they suggested not to get detector wet until they looked at it again) So I left it home while i went on vacation *Took my 1266-X and Eagle Spectrum instead *Eagle stayed in the truck* After I sent it back in it came back with a tear on the headphone connector wire (up by housing strain relief) and the on/off button was now sticking in the 5 and 7 number position (after turning a few times-only had resistance in the #5 position) *I also noticed that the on/off button could be lifted....and while lifting the detector would turn on, and you could turn the knob past off-and turn all the way around again!! (I think-because I quit after 3/4 over counter clockwise) Well after seeing these problems come back to me I sent an email to Dana Abraham (a wonderful person the talk to and emails) >sound cute on the phone too ??< Uuuum-excuse me :) *only my stand off-ish opinion ;) In my email I explained how I had loss of use of detector on vacation because of bezel, and out my time and postage (they would have reimbursed me) And frustration.....and worries if more damage may result if unit needs to be opened again. To make a long story short-I asked Dana "what fair agreement could come about to to get my detector "waterproof" and fix the returned problems"? This Wonderful-Understanding, Senior Customer Repair Specialists In her email reply to me suggested a solution. I pay ONLY labor charges and they will give me 1. New Housing 2.New Panel 3. New coil (mine had nick in cable that was sealed) 4.Fix the switch (I am sure is new now) 5.Also gave me a NEW waterproof headphone assembly (I had suggested the old would be fine-that could pull wire up into housing upon repair of switch) I paid $142.50 for labor and they gave me over $600 worth of parts!!! So I had a total of $453.50 (pinpoint and labor original repair was around $280) *bill as $311 but got supplies also* When I sent CZ20 back the last time I told Dana that "I consider her suggestion MORE than fair" I have NO problem paying the postage back to them. ****I sure didn't think they would give me NEW headphones**** The tear was so close to the strain relief insert-that could have easily been pulled into watertight cavity (my opinion-not an expert) Sooooooooooooo........ I can now say -> -> A Fisher, A Been....Berry-Berry """""" GOOD To ME!!!!!! :) The CZ20 was aligned (tuned up) and pressure tested. Tested GOOD :) Thank You-FISHER FOLKS *Mistakes Just Happen* We've all had them!! BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE SATISFACTION I am a SOLD believer. Thank You Dana-And My Tech Repair Specialists :)AND all the Good Folks-At-Fisher Research And Development. Very Well Done :stretcher: :fisher: :clapping: :detecting:
