How I was allowed my E-Trac

Hello everybody.

After reading the posts on this site for about 3 months, I finally decided to register and join the crowd. I am from central Nebraska and here is my story...

The wife rolled her eyes at me when I mentioned I would like to purchase a metal detector. I borrowed a BH QD II from a friend and found a 1919 wheatie, 1" down in sand, during deer season at an abandoned 1 room school. It felt great. Even better than shooting a deer. So the crops were ok this year along with the prices and I purchased an X-Terra 305 (Etrac users read on!).

This was just before Thanksgiving. I hunted my Father-In-Laws over the holiday. He must've been a tightwad because I didn't even find clad. Then I went a couple of miles away where he grew up and found 5 wheaties from the 40's and my first silver (1943 P War Nickel). I was pumped.

Day after Thanksgiving. Set a goal to put up some electric fence over cornstalks for my cattle, if I got that done I would detect the local football field where I went to High School. Took my 4 yr. old son with me. I told my self before I started hunting I was going to dig up the pulltab signals on the 305. 10 minutes into the hunt I dug, about 3" down, a ring. The closer I looked at it, still in the hole the more I began to realize what I'd found. I lost my wedding ring in 1994. I didn't know where but thought it was at my in-laws' Dairy where I worked (I always took it off to milk). This ring, my first found metal detecting, was mine...again!!!:clapping:

I called my wife on my cell.

Wife: Hello:confused:
Me: Hey. Guess what I found?
Wife: What?
My: My ring...
Wife: No you didn't.
Me: Yes I did...really.
Wife: No you didn't.
Me: Yes.....

The conversation went on like this for a while and I'm not sure I really convinced her until I got home and showed her.:surprised:

The ring in the picture on the left is the one I found, the one on the right is the one we bought to replace it...they are the same pattern and the right one is way more worn as I've worn it a lot working on the farm.

Sunday after Thanksgiving. After church went detecting in the small town we attend church at. Found my first Mercury dime (1942 - 3" down) and my first Buffalo (1916 - 4" down). I was on cloud nine all the next week. The weather turned cold, the ground froze and I had to quit. :surrender:

Many times before I turned in I would pick up the rings and coins and look at them and remember. 2 weeks after:

Wife: I wouldn't mind going with you.
Me: Going where?
Wife: Metal Detecting.
Me: No you wouldn't.
Wife: Yes, I believe I would.
Me: Then I get to get the detector I wanted in the first place!
Wife: .....(she didn't say anything)!

I now own a Minelab X-Terra 305, E-Trac, and (Pioneer 505 due to Kellyco's BoGo sale) and Andy's Book.:clapping::bouncy:

Thanks guys for reading such a long winded story. I hope ground thaw comes early. By the way I had to go out on nicer days and try the E-Trac in the yard and found the thin copper bracelet, 6" down, you also see pictured. There is also a corner of a Zippo Lighter found 4"down in my driveway. I found it with the X-Terra. Oldest coin 1910 wheatie 4" down also found with the X-Terra.

I especially want to thank the guys on YouTube for the videos (Neswiper (another Nebraskan), LaDigger, Niagracounty, Gibsondan, Vidslayer, Yuleah, Crunch, and the others. I learned so much from you

Take Care

Thank you rbholt80.

I've been reading your posts for some time, even singled them out to read each one. You're a straight up guy. I used to live in Texas in the '70's when I was a kid. Lived near McKinney north of Dallas and Caddo Mills NE of Dallas. I've learned a lot from you, especially the part about not giving up on the E-Trac and the love/hate relationship that first two months after the honeymoon is over. I'll remember that as I start the lessons!

WOW Neb !!
You find nice coins , then your wedding ring , you get to buy an E-trac and your wife wants to detect with you ........MAN , you must be doing something right !!!:clapping::super:

Now that is a great story and something you will remember the rest of your life.
My wife is also in this hobby and I hope your wife will enjoy it as much as we do as it will make it easier to get out and you will have a great hunting partner.
The X-Terra 305 is a great little detector and you will see the E-Trac will be a bit different, but will do so much more once you get to know it. I do recommend the Sun Ray X-1 probe highly to help find those deep targets or those that are sitting at a angle as it will throw off the pinpointing and be hard to find.
One thing to remember is it seems the wife's seem to get very lucky and may do better then you do at times, but that OK as they will be happy to go more with you and may even let you go more when she cant so you can scout up other sites to take her too.

Good Luck and keep us posted on your finds and don't be afraid to ask questions as there is some great people to help you here.

Rick

Great story. You are going to love your etrac and with the right attitude, even the learning curve can be fun.

Thanks for sharing your story, very nice that you found your long lost original wedding band. When you find a few interesting items the metal detecting bug bites you and keeps pulling at you to go fire up the machine and head out to detect.

Great story NebTrac and I don't feel it was long winded at all.

The Etrac is a great machine and my finds have greatly increased since I purchased mine a year ago. Still learning it everytime I go out.

I would like to suggest that even though the ground is still frozen you still go out detecting. I know it

Great story NebTrac, I love it!!! Welcome to the forum as it a great place to learn and a great group of guys. I have made many friendships here.

Keep up the great work and post your finds and questions often.

Nice read! The most valuable thing you discovered was another way to spend quality time with your spouse. Jim

Hey Neb, you can write long winded stories like that anytime! I was smiling for the whole story:clapping: Thanks for the great read. Terry in San Diego

Hey NebTrac. Welcome to the forum! That's a well written story and a great outcome. I'm looking forward to reading your future posts.

Your story wasnt long-winded. I enjoyed every word, and stories like your's help make the winter freeze go quicker. So glad your wife may beging enjoying this hobby with you. I took a chance about 9 years ago, and bought my wife a lightweight Tesoro, (I've been detecting since the 70's), not sure if she would ever want to go. She wanted me to go with her on Christmas day, MD'ing on the beach. We did, and she did better than me ;) and has loved it ever since. I see that for you, too.

Hey Neb, Welcome!! Great story. Now can you just convince my wife to do the same?? I think the better half's are usually more understanding if you bring home some decent stuff. Your find was the ultimate stuff!!

Thanks to everyone for the kind replies. One thing I can say for sure is; should my wife do better than metal detecting, it will be one competition I wouldn't mind coming in second on.

Overall, she really doesn't stand a chance with the E-Trac in the LONG run does she??? Why do you think I gave her the 305...

You might want to look at your 1916 Buffalo nickel real close. A 1916 double die obverse starts out at $4000, and tops out at about $225,000.

Thanks for the advise. I did look pretty close and had seen that scenerio in a coin mag. I picked up. Will look at it again.

Thanks,

NebTrac
