How is this for a lightweight Explorer..

i've seen that one before. but i have two complaints...how do you put your Sunray probe on it? and its easy to clean a normal explorer rod because the coil cord runs through the center of the rod. now, if you get that coil cord muddy it would suck cleaning the "sprial" part of the cord!:ranting: but dont get me wrong i do think its neat! just wouldn't use it!

Heck nothing is perfect and personally feel you bring up some good points. Not using the stock NiMH battery would be a strong point with me...anyway individual rechargeables could be used.

When building a lightweight unit certainly don't add bulk and weight but seeing velcro straps being used for other models am sure they could be used modded this way as Velcro straps can be bought by the inch rather inexpensively.

As far as cleaning the cord am sure cover could be had as have seen them at planted hunts used on conventional style units as could be a problem.

For a company to change units cosmetically would be cost inefficient and worked for 11 years now, however arm and back injuries concern many and Minelab does make lightweight units
that work well for many although certainly not the equal efficiency wise.

For years the Minelab Sov. was the most modded unit in the hobby but not many modded Explorers so just for the perusal of forum members and again use what works for you..

Dan,
i agree with every point you made, but if you could put a Sunray probe on that and bring it back to stock weight with the probe on there that would really be something. if someone could do that to an SE Pro or Etrac that would really be something! i could deal with the cleaning for an SE Pro or Etrac like that!! someone should start doing that. buying used detectors and building like one of those a year! you could sell them for extra than what you bought the detector for. for those guys that cant handle the weight. i'd buy one if someone built one out of the newer models!

I had one of his modded units and it worked great, and, you could swing it all day.

Yep sure is and Keith does excellent work....Being done by various people with all models into the E-trac and hope they are as talented.....
