How many folks using the Sunray X-1?

Just wondering how many forum members are using the X-1. What do you see as the benefits vs. the liabilities? Do you mount the probe itself on the upper rod or on the battery compartment? Thanks for any input!

Benefits are typical for what others have seen.

- Uses detectors battery source
- Gives same target tones allowing you to zero in on target you heard before digging
- has good depth

Cons

- Some people think the added weight (I've found once I got used to swinging the E-Trac, added weight hasn't been much of a problem)
- Some think the cord can be problematic (I swing in woods/weeds and have not seen too much of a problem, certainly no more than having your coil catch stuff)
- Switch can be left on - (I have first hand experience at this...its embarassing, but you learn quickly)
- Probably the biggest is the fact if something goes wrong with the probe or its switch, it might render your hunt a bust (putting machine out of commision), whereas a Propointer wouldn't.

I have the probe mounted on the battery compartment.

The biggest advantage for me is,the x-1 will run the same discrimination as is set on your e-track. I read an early post where someone, I can't remember who, drilled a hole in the shaft to accommodate the cord from the coil to the x-1 switch box. I like the idea and am going to do the same.
I do wish the probe cord was a little longer, you have to place your detector fairly close to my plug to use it. I have the probe mounted on the shaft but think the battery compartment is a better configuration.

I just purchased a x-1 but because of late northern michigan storm have not gotten out and used it yet. One thing I'm going to like is with the x-1 the coil cable is on the outside so coil changes will be very easy. I still have my stock upper shaft that I keep in the truck so if by chance the sunray fails I will be able to swap the upper shaft and keep hunting. I am going to carry my pro pointer with me at first to compare and double check signals. I have mine mounted on the upper shaft because I have a cover over my battery compartment and handle. HH.

Have mine mounted on side of battery compartment. Advantages: you're hearing the same tones as your coil, if you buy an extra lower rod with every coil it takes second to change a coil, and since it's attached to your detector you won't lose it :detecting:

Have them on 3 other detectors too. One of the best accessories you'll ever buy for your detector

Won't leave home with out it!----Battery compt. mounted (gives a wee bit better balance).-------Del

I do
Mounted on the batt.

What Del said goes for me too. Bought my x1 in 2003 for my first minelab detector(explorer II). When i purchased the E-Track i bought one for it also so i have a back up if one of them needs to be sent in for repair's. Have both of them mounted on the battery compartment. AL

Me too ! :)

I ran mine mounted on the battery but moved it to the shaft. If you run it on the shaft you will never forget to flip the switch! Beside it was scuffing up the battery housing too much for my liking.

Love mine. I do keep the spare upper shaft in my bag just in case something would happen to the probe on a hunt.

few minuses, you loose some signal strenght, but very little, because from box X-1 to switch not right cable. another its adds weight and if its starts to work bad, you can loose your detecting day or more.
its best if you detect at nights, you can pinpoint in zero light. but if you just day hunter, Garrett pro pointer is better solution, cheaper and dont go between detector and coil. good luck Stasys

I'll never have anything else. All the others pin pointers can't hold a candle to it imo. Adjustable sensitivity, gives the exact same feedback as what caused you to dig in the first place, invaluable in that aspect. Feedback comes right through the headphones. An actual PINPOINT. Not just close to metal and start singing. I use that a lot! Weight not a problem at all if you have ran any of these style ML's. I often wonder why the weight of something like the X 1 being a problem when most are running SEF coils up to jumbo sizes :blink:The best accessory you can buy if you ask me. Mounted on the upper shaft for me. For those who think it might make it front heavy, shorten the detector length and get that coil right in front of your feet. Ya ain't shoveling out a ditch you're detecting.

Put my order in today, went back and forth between Sun Ray and Garrett Pro pointer, Sun Ray won out. my main concern was weight and the exposed cables, but I guess I can live with that.

I have one like it. Mounted to shaft. Pros you can't lose it. Con if ur running TTF u have to watch the screen, at least where I hunt some of the soil is highly mineralized. And it sounds off on everything.

Good idea...I would have except for the poor depth for my style of target retrieval (screwdriver 80% of the time)
A mate has one and he is often leaving the toggle switch on probe.

Just got off the phone with Ralph. Mine is going back for repair. Thanks Ralph.

I drilled my upper shaft and ran the cord through it. Also mounted the X1 mount directly to the shaft with two small screws. The setup is very tight - no wobble. Does add weight though, but I am a young man, so weight isn't a problem yet - as evidenced by my custom rifle bipod mount <== love that mod!

Can't live without mine since it uses the detector circuitry...
There's nothing like cutting a plug on a marginal signal & then
putting that probe in there & hearing the yodel & seeing that box & those numbers sing silver...
Stand-alone pinpointers are all-metal...that means sorting out all of the signals in a hole...
& I'll tell you what, the x-1 means quick recovery & covering more ground...
That means more chance of great finds...
