How quiet does your mojave run?

NCtoad

Member
Just got a mojave recently and noticed it gets pretty chirpy at times. Doesn't matter if the gb switch is on low or high. I thought it might be EMI, but today I noticed if I wiggle the coil cord where it enters the coil it falses. I have the cord strapped near the coil so it's not flopping around, but it still falses quite a bit.

Hmm, is the connector absolutely set all the way in?

I only get EMI/chatter if I run max sens, at certain locations. No wiggle chatter.

Yes, I double checked it today, unplugged it and plugged it back in and screws the locking ring all the way tight.

Mine is super quiet except on the highest gain and even then just a couple of sites.
Sounds like a bad coil connection...at the coil.

Luckily I bought it new and sent in the warranty card. I guess I'll send it back to Tesoro. Thanks for the answers!

How high was the sensitivity set when it chatters?

I usually hunt with it set halfway on the white. It's noisier at lower disc settings, but still falses with the disc cranked all the way. What makes me think something isn't right is that it falses when I move the coil wire back and forth where it comes out of the coil. I sent it off to Tesoro today so I'll find out soon what's wrong with it.

I was asking about the sensitivity setting. If it was set at max it might not be the coil.

I actually just sent mine in for a checkup along with a used outlaw I picked up.
The Mojave started to get noisy when the disc was set past zinc.
Had it cranked last week for my niece to find some coins and it was real noisy until I backed
the disc off into the tab zone. Probably a bad pot. I'll know for sure when I get it back

Hope Rusty sorts yours out. They always do a good job for me so far.

Mine's worse with the sens set high at 10, but not in the red, but it still falses at lower sens settings when I wiggle the cable wire at the coil.

I had spoke with Rusty at Tesoro, explained to him my Mojave was falsing a bit when sens was turned up past 5 and into the red zone...he said it's a bit chatty when at the higher sens...said to try to run it with the toggle switch on high and see if it made a difference...it did settle down the chatter quite a bit,but it was still there...turned down the sens to 5 or under and it was quiet.
Also suggested to try another coil on the Mojave..said the brown 8" coil will give another inch in depth he has found.
Soooo I swapped the 7" coil to the 8" coil and the Mojave gave the same chatter as before at the same settings...put the 7"coil on my Silver µMax and no chatter no falsing...
Going to try it on my Bandido ll µMax next to see the results..
So it just maybe the nature of the little black beast....more testing will ensue:)

Did you try wiggling the cable where it enters the coil? Mine falsed doing that.

Yes i had the same falsing when I touched the cable or tapped on the shaft as well....was chatty on the higher sensitivity.
If I run it around 5 it's much quieter..sometimes toggling the switch to high it well quiet it down also.
I thought as you did...maybe I had a bad coil, wasn't the case..I switched coils, put the 7" on my Silver uMax and it worked fine.
I changed and put the 8" coil on the Mojave and got the same results....a chatty Mojave. So It wasn't the coil in my case...just learned the Mojave is just a chatty beast....not like the 6 other Tesoro's I own...their quiet and stable.
I like the Mojave once I got some time on it...great little detector.

Cheers Bob.

Just got a call from Rusty at Tesoro...he actually left a voicemail so I didn't get to talk to him in person, but he said my mojave had a bad coil. They put a new one on and shipped it out today! That's fast service! It just got there yesterday. I'm impressed to say the least!!

Great to hear you found the problem with your Mojave...you will enjoy it:)

Cheers Bob.

Hi Bob,
I already enjoyed it and had found a 10K ring with it. I'm sure I'll really like it now:detecting:
