How to get good VID accuracy

Read the manual. Ground balance over clean ground. Make sure the target is centered under the coil. Make smooth passes keeping coil at same level.Slow passes can cause error, so not too slow. Not always possible, but try to make a wide enough pass so detector can read the ground surrounding the target. Lower sensitivity level is better. Use All Metal mode if DISC is struggling. (Sometimes this one works the best.)

That is some good information. A lot of people think that the sensitivity adjustment controls depth. Too much sensitivity in fact can completely mask out a target in either bad soil or too many targets under the coil.

Iffy signals sometimes lock on better coming over the target from a different direction or angle of the coil. I call this "playing" with the target.

Thanks John, yeah the tilting of the coil on some targets I forgot about. Shallow targets can be harder to get a good reading on (especially trash items like bottle caps) if the sensitivity is too high. If you can't pinpoint, you won't get a good VID reading. The discriminator struggles so I go into All Metal and it really cleans it up. Of course the fingertip buttons (one handed operation) make it so easy to adjust sensitivity (or whatever) on the fly. It's easy to get lazy and not do anything but that's a mistake. Use the controls when needed, that's what they are there for and it literally only takes a couple seconds.

Wouldn't it be nice if the MAX had a toggle switch, to flip back and forth between all metal mode and discriminate mode.

Be even better on ID if it had a toggle switch to filp it into Etrac mode lol
