Like Roland said, it looks like half of it was meant to be given to somebody's sweetheart but for some reason, the feelings wern't mutual, or she ran off with somebody else so the person just gave the whole thing a toss! Sure would like to hear the backstory of that lost gold...nice find there Jim!
