Huge find for me... to clean or not to clean?

go-rebels

New member
Found with the F75 LTD and 5" DD at the site of an old church in the Upsate of SC right next to the building with iron everywhere! The color is a very dark gray that doesn't look like typical dug silver. It appears to grade VF/VG. Hmmm, maybe some time in my electrolysis bath will help...

Way to go-rebels! That is a huge find, and a beauty.

It's your decision, but to me it looks amazing as is and I like the toning on it.

It's high grade enough on the obverse that if it were me I'd resist the urge to mess with it.

That is a GREAT, GREAT FIND, go-rebels. DON'T CLEAN IT!!! Although it shows a fair amount of wear, it is a KEY DATE...if my old eyes are seeing 1866 correctly. You may want to have that sweetheart professionally graded and cleaned...but don't clean it yourself. Now, you have given me something to shoot for with my LTD. WTG! HH jim tn

might want to get it graded and slabbed......... Nice find

This is from the net can't vouch for it's accuracy.

If is has an "S" mintmark (for "San Francisco"), $50 in "Good" condition (which is not actually very good at all), $100 in "Fine", $150 in "Very Fine", $325 in "Extremely Fine", $700 in "Almost Uncirculated" and $1,900 in "Uncirculated (MS-60)."

Without a mintmark (meaning that it was minted in Philadelphia), the coin is much rarer (a mintage of 8,725, compared to 135,000 in San Francisco), although more common in better condition; the value would be $500 in "Good" condition, $775 in "Fine", $950 in "Very Fine", $1,100 in "Extremely Fine", $1,200 in "Almost Uncirculated" and $1,800 in "Uncirculated (MS-60)."

do some more research would be happy to know a professional value

Well done

I don't see a mint mark so its probably the philly-as said take it to a pro or it will end up worthless-never clean any old coins, guns, knives ect-the patina helps date the item-and helps prove its not a fake
