So this past Monday I had the day off from work and decided to make a day of the 1850's house. I got there about 9:30AM and didn't leave until after 4PM...Ahhhh detecting bliss. (oh, and probably 3+ hours of mowing)
So I had a section of the front lawn I hadn't finished my second grid/pass on. I continued where I left off and managed the 1888 IHP.
After a few hours I decided I would hit this large cleared out section across from the driveway. This section lines on the front side of the house but to one side and butts up against the main road, so the potential was there for some nice undisturbed soil and some picnicing relics. It hadn't been mowed in months so I actually spent a good 2 hours mowing it down to the highest height my lawn mower would go. I strapped on my 12X15 for maximum coverage and went to work. The entrance to the area was a bit trashy, I found another complete more modern crotel bell, as well as a fragment from one of the large size old ones.
I also found the home made pin and the patent applied for items. The pin looks like it is old based on the back pin style, anyone have any ideas as to the age? Sort of an odd looking pin.
The patent applied for item has a pretty cool design on the front, it looks like the lid to something. There is some sort of a picture of a massive city I feel I should recognize but I can't put a name to it. Any thoughts?
I was pretty excited about the B&O Railroad luggage tag since I had only heard of that railway from Monopoly!
The NRA item is old, I don't find much on their logo with the E Pluribus Unum, so it may be one of the first ones. Also, it is not really a button, if you've seen some of those napsack rivets, it looks more like that, except the top and bottom are connected by an oval shaped pin. Very odd.
I was starting to get stressed as I hadn't found any silver yet, and I didn't want to get skunked on my 4th trip out. I got to the middle of the area with time running out and started more wandering around trees rather than straight gridding.
Within the next 45 minutes I would uncover the silver rosie, the 4 flat buttons, the 3 silver coin spill, and my mystery item, the large copper disk with what looks like counter stamped W's on one side with a circle. Doesn't it always happen you find a hot spot right when you have to leave, even stayed so long I got a call from the wife!
So someone help me with this copper disk, I've been staring at it so long my eyes are going crazy. It's the diameter of a silver half dollar, so it is larger than all of the US Large cents. Also, it's about half the thickness of the large cents. However, it could be some sort of colonial copper coin right? Could the W's and the perf looking circles be some sort of Washington commemorative? Could it have been the start of a flat button that was never finished? There is no shank. I swear on the side without the W's at the bottom where there is an old nick I see the numbers 56, or it could be SS I'm not sure. Then on that same side, I keep seeing the top portion of a head with that one S shaped curl of hair. Anyone else seeing that?
So, what is everyone's thought on what it is? Colonial copper that was decorated? If so, anyway to ID it?
