hunting burned down structures

How many of you have hunted sites that a structure once stood but caught fire and burned down? The reason I'm asking is I have a site right now I have have permission to hunt that a church stood in the late 1800's. In 1885 it caught fire and burned down. They built a new church in the same spot as the old one in the 1930's. I know it has to be full of trash and all kinds of debris I will use TTF definitely but, I was wondering about cinders etc. I just wonder is there any secrets to hunting a site like this? Has anyone else hunted sites like this and any secrets to success?

Good question. And yes I have tried. Old school that burned down twice. It was my first few hunts with Etrac. I didn't find much worth keeping. If I went back now I feel I could do better by crawling with a small coil. But it is rough. Hope to hear some suggestions...

TTF all the way. Open pattern. Small coil is a plus. Lots of patience and go slow. Listen for the solid non-irony hits and keep an eye on your depth and numbers. I pulled 15 indians and a barber out of an old burned down farmhouse last year. It's slow going but the coins I found were in great condition. Good luck!

One site I have hunted for years burned down was rebuilt and burned down again and again. There are so many peices of brass copper and whatzits, pipes, electrical parts wires, and lots of chuncks of wood. I see no reason to use TTF at my site as I can open the screen up more with less discrimination, I can use quick mask to check for false iron signals and I still have the multi tone that you loose with TTF AND can use discrimination on items of consistent bother. Although there are lots of iron objects chunks, rusty stuff I still dont have that much of a problem discerning between the good and bad in conductive.. In some hot spots that I have already hunted out with multi tone I will hunt with TTF as a last resort and I have had some success but not enough to convert me to TTF. Whatever you do stick to one or the other. I bring different loops for different areas and techniques. I investigate all decent signals as its easy for me to remove the top layer and bring in a better signal.

Once you set up to hunt, Swing slow and sometimes only 1ft one way if its clustered. Criss Cross patterns in the hot spots. Rake off or clean off surface debri on hot spots. Bring tools, you will learn what works best.
AS Filo says "solid non irony hits and check for depth and numbers" THEN I pinpoint and FEEL for the size of the target small and deep with high tone I dig no matter the number. Some times its jsut easyier to dig and see but that depends on if you can dig the H out of the spot as you will dig lots of targets. I have found coins in the middle of charcoal and iron chunks The machine is amazing. Dont be afraid to use discrimination and multi tone to save some time.

good luck and let us know how you do.
