I'm looking for a woman's wedding ring in a feedlot (horses)with my Quattro. I discriminated out iron,foil, silver, and copper. I would get readings for jewelry, and get the sound, but could never find anything. I tried low and high trash settings, auto and manual sensitivity, all metal, and coin-jewelry settings. I just don't know what I'm doing wrong. I read Sabisch's book several times last night. This place is LOADED with trash. I'm using a Platybus coil. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks

hunting feedlots (AGAIN)

That sounds like a real mistery to me, especially if it's working on air or grounds tests on other stuff, especially jewelry. I've heard that it's sometimes hard to pick up small rings and chains, depending on the size coil you have. I'd do some serious tests on other "known" items, burried if possible, then try it again. What size is your coil? If it's over 8 or 10 inches, that might be a problem?:|
Find a ring similar to the one your looking for.Check that ring signal. Try to narrow down where it was lost. Grid off the area. Then hunt for that signal. With the sensitivity in auto. It should be shallow unless dirt has been added to the area. Also hunt very slow.Low trash will give a more accurate reading. Go easy on the disc. Negative numbers maybe if it doesn't null too much. That sounds like a good thing bubber. How come it's driving you nuts, if it's reading good?
I think that other guys post is great about gridding off the area and trying to narrow down the readings, but even if you search in all metal mode, AS LONG AS THE DETECTOR IS WORKING, AS IN PICKING UP GOOD READINGS FROM YOUR TEST RING, ( I did that capitals just to emphasize that), everything "should" be a go. Man, you've got my curiosity going wild on this one. Please, let us know what you end up with, even if it's a couple of old bridal bits or something. That sounds very interesting, and I'd love to see you find the ring. Don't give up till your sure you've covered all the bases.

Bless your heart, bubber. I'll bet that 5" coil will help, especially with all that trash. You've got me thinking about horse stalls now. I never really though about it, but it makes sense, not only in your case with the lost ring, but what about "old" horse stalls where people sat around and/or, worked with the horses and maybe lost some stuff. Good luck dude, and hope your cold gets better. Yea, I can imagine hunting in the cold, snowy weather, with a cold and your detector is giving you fits. That would make me wanna run for the house for a nice hot bowel of soup.:|

The thing that gets me sometimes, is I'm detecting on a beach, and there's NO trash, No sounds at all. Deadly quiet. And I'm thinking there's something wrong with the detect, so I throw a coin down to be sure, swipe it, and there's that familiar signal again. It's just a quiet beach. That's when I start thinking about going elsewhere!

Bless your heart, Golden. I admit I'm really sloppy on the spelling thing. Don't know why I do that, because I've always kind prided myself with spelling, but now that we have spell check and that kind of thing, there's no excuse. As far as the "no sound thing", I absolutley agree with you. I ran into that yesterday at the beach. Nothing for a L O N G time. You start getting paranoid and start checking known things like your scoop or a coin in your pocket. My problem was I didn't even have any coins in my pocket and I had such a "nothing" day, I didn't even find one clad coin, let alone anything good. Boy, what a trial, but I know I've had those days before. Probably need a different beach. That beach in particular, is called dog beach, and there aren't too many tourists there. I need to go elsewhere.
