Hunting in P/P question

dan93

New member
I am new to the GT and have not hunted yet in P/P mode, it says in the manual not to hunt in P/P mode as the ground balance is disabled.
How is the GT compensating for ground when hunting in P/P, is it locked at the last ground setting? Also will the threshold tones change and does the meter still give readings when hunting in P/P?

I have the Sovereign ELITE, and I am a beach hunter mostly, so my info may not be the same for you. BUT...

I hunt in "All Metal" (or PP) mode and VARIABLE tone mode all the time and when I get a signal I switch to Disc Mode to see if it's a diggable target. I find that I can sometimes get a target hit in All Metal that goes away when I switch to Disc. I have to remove some sand from above the target for Disc mode to see it. So, I believe I am getting more depth in All Metal over Disc....

Good luck and happy hunting!

Do you get different threshold tones and iron tone when you are in PP with the Elite?

With it in Variable Tone mode, the short answer is YES. But, it's not the same as in Disc mode. Iron gives a high pitched sound in All Metal mode. Switch to Disc mode to ID the target...

the variable tone mode is disabled in pinpoint all metal mode.

how does the sov compensate for the ground in pinpoint mode? same way as it does in disc mode.

the pinpoint all metal mode is the same on the elite as it is on the GT. the GT has an additional all metal mode where the user can manually ground adjust the sov and lock it in (fixed) or let it track the ground by itself (track). not so on the elite, the computer/processor does the ground adjustment.

In the manual it says ground balance is disabled in P/P so what is happening when hunting in P/P? Is it using the digital filtering from Disc mode? I am only learning the GT so I have only hunted in Disc so far.

Myself I only hunt in disc mode, but I am a land hunter and find in disc I can get signals I can not get in all metal pinpoint mode, so I only use the disc mode and use the all metal pinpoint mode when pinpointing and if no signal I will go back to disc and pinpoint the best I can and with the help of my Sun Ray S-1 I can find my deep target.
In all metal the tone ID is off and the numbers on the meter are not IDing and is a signal strength meter more then anything. In all metal tracking it will ground balance I understand for those that do some prospecting and once you get set you can switch it to lock so it will stay at that setting, but in pinpoint I don't think it does much of ground balance and could be why I seem to get better depth in disc.. I never tried running it in track and lock yet as disc been working good for me for the last 17 years with the Sovereign and land hunting.

Ive read it described as digital filtering, it says so in one of the sov manuals. easy enough to flip a toggle switch and see how it works for you.

I can see why some hunt in PP mode after watching the video. I still wonder what will happen after long periods of hunting in PP mode with the ground balance being disabled.

It's a form of all metal that doesn't use or need a ground balance. Not sure the merits of all metal without a ground balance versus with one, but I know there are several forms of all metal, all with their own perks and cons. I wouldn't worry so much about not having one, as it seems very stable in the worst of grounds and punches deep like a PI. If you surf this forum back a month or so somebody listed numerous PIs that he feels PP mode on his Sovereign is as deep or deeper than. That was very impressive to me. The bigger question to me now is this- will All Metal fixed (once set via tracking) on the GT give me more depth then PP mode? I suspect not, and maybe even less depth, because there seems something very unique going on with PP mode and a bit of a mystery behind it. I've got a ton of hunting to do with PP before I even begin to compare it to All Metal Fixed down the road here. I have used All Metal Fixed a bit here and there but not nearly enough yet to compare, but I have heard some say that the All Metal Fixed mode on the GT was among the best they've seen on a detector, and with a unique language all it's own just like PP mode. It's like we've got 3 machines locked up in that control box, at least one being like a "PI Mode".

I've never seen all metal go as deep as Pp. I hunt in Pp with volume maxed and sens maxed, then just flip the remote switch. Now she's in disc to check the target. Sometimes the target is to deep for disc to sound off, so I have to take a scoop or two. This set up blows my Dual Field away in depth by 2-3" easy and I can disc targets.

I have no doubt your probably right, because I suspect PP has some very unique abilities that regular All Metal Fixed doesn't for some odd reason. I remember Gunnar though I think saying All Metal mode in fixed was the best he ever used on a detector (I think he said that), and that he could tell target traits much like you can in PP. I've read old posts saying similar things, about All Metal being among the best people ever used on a detector. We are truly blessed with the "3 detectors in one" type of modes these Sovereigns have. In fact, if you count all metal tracking mode (which can have it's use in fastly changing ground), or also Iron Mask OFF mode, we've really got 5 different machines in one.

One thing that I'm going to do some videos on in the future, is comparison of PP mode on the Sovereign to the Blisstool. I think that would be interesting, as it appears PP mode might have very similar depth. And, I think the Bliss doesn't have modulated response (meaning the deeper a target gets the softer it gets) like PP mode. And while the Bliss can raise discrimination up to the small foil range, so can you judge targets in PP by listening to the response and judging the reaction of stuff. I hear there are at least 10 distinct target "words" to PP, so in effect you've got a way like in disc to judge targets. I can already see the the few traits iron often has in PP, without even needing to flip to disc to judge them. No tone alerts on either machine or VDI for either too, so that's pretty much a wash between them. At the very least at least some say PP mode is a match or better for many PI units. Just interested in how it matches up to a Bliss, or the new Deeptech (?) machine I'm hearing very good things about, which appears to be much like the Bliss to some.

Yes I liked to hunt in PP and it ever gave me any problems, and it is deep , funny thing is each mode hits diffrently on targets, --- like in the regular all metal the high conductors gave a high tone wich was hard to hear at depth , but in pinpoint was much better . the GT has better depth abilitys in really badd ground over the bliss, as the bliss never really goes out of disq mode. I still am a fan of the GT,s all metal probly one of the best ever .

Gunnar, glad to see you chime in old friend. Miss your posts.

Here's a thread in the beach forum where a guy lists some PI units he feels PP mode on the GT is as deep or deeper than. Very impressive list. Second page I think has more...

For those that hunt in the PP mode....what kind of battery draw do you find hunting in PP has ? Critter, you have done a lot of testing on the PP mode...have you noticed any significance difference in battery draw using this mode ?

Nope, but it's not like I time my battery usage. I run a light weight 750ma 3 cell lipo in my alkaline holder, and can usually get two or more 7 hour hunts each or so in before a re-charge. I generaly don't wait to hit the low battery alarm though, and will re-charge after a long hunt. I have a second pack to use, but I keep that asleep at a present voltage level stored in a metal box in my refrigerator for best long life storage, as I do my other lipos for my RC electric planes.
