I primarily hunt sandy beachs , saltwater, but I am not a water hunter. I do look for coins also and any other items of value wherever I am at. I was thinking of getting the 705 but maybe that is just to similar to the 70 I already have. I do have all the coils for the xterra 70. My xterra 70 is about 3 years old now but works perfect everywhere I use it. Was thinking maybe minelab would come out with the latest and greatest , maybe another xterra model. So my question is what would compliment the xterra in a lightweight package that is versatile , easy to set up, ergonomically correct, deep seeking and accurate?

I am down to my xterra 70 now and looking for a second detector

You're Good to Go Bro! I've owned many different brands of metal detectors over the years but I've not found one yet that does any better than the Minelab X-terra 70; even on the beach! I sold the #70 and purchased a new Minelab Safari last spring and, in retrospect, wish I had kept the X-terra 70 w/ the two extra coils. I've sinse sold the Safari and purchased a new X-terra 505 and find it to be a very good machine and very similar to the X-terra 70. So my advice would be to keep what you've got and keep on doing what you're doing. If it's not broke ... don't fix it!

The 70 is fine. No real need to change or get a second unless you are looking for more depth in the wet sand or want a water proof detector. The Minlab multi frequency detectors will do those jobs very well, but are heavy and expensive.
I suspect that you will see a new model of X-Terra's out in about 3 weeks if Minelab are true to form. I guess we'll find out real soon.

Think you would gain very little by getting another detector. SeniorSeeker and I both already tried that route, thinking we needed something better than the XT-70. We both got Safari's and at least in my case, have found out that I had gained very little over the XT-70 by doing so. Fortunately I had kept my XT-70 as a backup detector, but have a feeling it is going to get equal billing with the Safari from here on out.
mtnmn I agree 100%. I have tried others before the xterra 70 came along and to me it had the perfect balance between weight, ergonomics, depth and able to hunt in a variety of situations. Simple to use and effective everywhere. I have always felt that feeling comfortable with a machine and having confidence in it is the most important aspect of the hobby. I dont feel like I leave anything behind with the xterra 70. you can spend alot of money chasing a rainbow in this hobby and its nice to just sit back and say, I got my holy grail of metal detectors, let the rest chase all they want.

Amen Guys! It took me a few years to figure it out but, when I did, I decided that I was better off with my 'Ole X-terra 70. Unfortuantely I sold it but have now purchased a new X-terra 505, which appears to be every bit as good as the X-70 I had previously. When you can find an old rusty hair pin @ 8 plus inches, with sensitivity set mid-way up the scale, what more could you ask for in a metal detector? When I increased the sensitivity to maximum, I found pennies at 10" - 12"! I wish it wouldn't have taken me so long to realize I had the perfect detector all along and wish I hadn't sold it and bought the Safari. Don't get me wrong, the Safari is a awesome detector but not that much better, at finding things, than the X-terra 70 was here in western Michigan. And after researching the X-terra 505/705 and thinking about the kinds of hunting I'd likely do here in my state, I felt spending the extra money for the X-terra 705 was not warranted. That's why I opted for the X-terra 505 and I'm glad I did. The extra money saved will buy me a new 6" DD 18.75kHz round/waterproof coil for hunting our city parks and the like.

From what I have been reading, it seems like a pretty good all-around detector... waterproof, pretty light, good depth, and pretty well priced. Just my opinion... Anyone else think the AT Pro would be a good compliment?? I'm not familiar with it - only what I have read and it's reviews.

I thought about the at pro as a back up machine but I am still on the fence on that. Seems to be alot of people saying it is noisy and how they live with it to hear the high tones etc. I would prefer the cadillac style of the xterra over a model A I think. I will wait until the honeymoon period is over on the at pro and then see.

I've had my 70 for a fews years now and borrowed a 705 from a friend to test....No differance to me except the backlight. I would like to try the E-Trac but I am very happy with the 70. I get coins at 9+ inches and civil war lead at 12+ but at this depth the TID's are not very accurate but I dig everything when I am relic hunting and never rely totally on ID's, I use the Grey Ghost Ultimate headphones... wouldn't leave home without'em! I use all metal mode and now find the old coins that I was missing before...just listen!
what I am trying to do is come up with a back up detector. The buttons on my old 70 are starting to get flat and hard to use, so its going in to minelab for a new membrane on the touchpad soon. I wanted a back up to use while its away. I will probably go with the xterra 705 since I have all the coils already.
