it just might mean the amount of none salt hunters is greater then salt hunters.and maybe they are waiting for you to make the first post about it.

Perhaps some have. A lot of people realize you can't develop an accurate opinion in the field by just going out for a quick hunt. You need to put in a little "Time" .......the reports will soon be out. Patience is a virtue. :)

I would have to say that the land hunters out number the salt water hunters by 1000 to 1 or more......

But I am not sure if I will post results because of all the negative comments I might get.
Like: your too old and ugly .. what do you know about detectors
or I bet your beach isn't as salty as mine
or was the moon full when you tried it
or I bet you bought that jewelry at the store

:lmfao:

HH to all :detecting:

I live near saltwater beaches and I'm not even the least bit inquisitive about how this machine handles the salt ..... I already know better ...... I'm more concerned about how the discrimination is , and how much depth it will get in normal soil , and how well it handles highly minteralized soil .....Oh, and I already know tht it handles AIR with the best of them ....Jim

Well said Oak...yeh, the AT PRO has brought out the haters, and this forum smells different than it used to...(bad) Like a lingering fart...

Those are the kind of detectorist that if I meet in the field, I get away from them quickly as they are useless for rational discussion.

Take care,

Enjoy your AT Pro!

Alan

There's always some interesting politicking going on every time a new metal detector is released. Add some serotonin deprived people and it becomes a little volatile at times. This one's mild compared to some others being released in the last 10 years.. Alan's really good at getting natural gold. I am really looking forward to seeing his results when the weather turns around. I saw some of finds from this past year....pretty impressive.

Good to see someone else from the medical field here. I am a registered nurse, and early on in my career I worked in research doing some pharmaceutical drug trials involving double & triple blind studies. I was introduced to some very high standard requirements early on. Air testing detectors has too many changing variables, especially when you introduce various programs, EMI etc to get any areal reliable data. I am still amazed at how emotional some people get over an electronic piece of equipment that beeps. So, compared to my other metal detectors being air tested in the past, this unit really seems impressive. And I will not be disappointed if this machine (AT Pro) behaves differently in the field. I have brought many of my finds to work in the past several years. My present employment is in rehab, and other Rn's, Mangers, Physio Therapists, Maintenance workers and the husband of the administrator have gone out and purchased ACE 250's. They are watching carefully to see how much of an improvement this new machine is over the ACE 250.

I wish you well in this exciting hobby! Hope you get many hours and great finds next year. Oh....I forgot, you live in Texas, you can find bling all year round.

I don't think that there are any haters on the forum ....I just think that there are a lot of people that want to see what the AT Pro can REALLY do , and not in the air , and not what they HEARD it would do ...... FACTS my friends , NOT HYPE ......The TRUTH , the WHOLE TRUTH, and NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH !!....SO HELP YOU GOD !!.....

I'm looking for a light weight machine that I can use on land and in fresh water, and on the dry sand at the beach .....One that discriminate well and go deep ......That's the only information I need ...information is trickling in as time goes by ..... I just want to know the facts BEFORE I buy a machine ...not after ......Jim

According to Vaughan Garrett the engineers were supposed to have taken it to the Texas coast to check it out. Whether they did or not is unknown as I haven't heard one way or another.

I remember talk of that back a few weeks ago .....Folks are having problems with the wet salt, so I guess that " Tweak" as it was called back then didn't happen .....

I think the AT PRO was designed and intended for relic hunting and shallow fresh water as Garrett has stated.
Using it as such and even coin shooting in the school yard and tot lot it will perform with the best of them.
In the dry sand and using the Standard Mode I did not experience the noise and falsing another said he experienced.

On dry sand (fresh or salt) it works as expected in the Standard Mode. (haven't had time to really evaluate the Pro Mode)
It detects as deep in the sand as would be expected and it wont miss a coin or ring if you pass the coil over it.
The deepest target so far has been a 1/4oz lead fishing weight down about 10" and that was a very solid signal.

It is good quality construction on par with the Fisher F75 and has optional settings for the more experienced to use.
The auto ground balance is fast and accurate but there is a manual GB mode.
The tones are crisp and clear ... easy to pinpoint a coin without switching into that mode.
The Iron Audio lets you hear the iron content of a target and makes it easy to ID a steel bottle cap.
Broken up signals, raspy sounds, one way reports, are all indicative of a undesirable object such as a nail or piece of iron.
Sometimes you will get a high tone one way and a med tone the other way. Switching to pinpoint mode there is nothing there.
Dont even bother digging that target ... it is a piece of iron or nail.

Coins, rings, foil, pull tabs, small jewelery, will all have a solid repeatable med or high tone.
With the Iron Audio on you will hear the iron content of a steel bottle cap.
With it off you will get a med or high tone as if it were a pull tab or coin.

On the salt water soaked sand I could not get it settled down enough to make it usable.
Tried manual GB of 20, 15, 10, 5, and 0 with all combination's of sensitivity ... no effect on the falsing and noise.
Perhaps someone else will find a setting that will work but in the 30 minutes I tried I could not find one.
Garrett has never said that it would work in wet salt sand so I cant fault the machine.
Submerged in the shallow salt water it might settle down ... I dont know as I did not get into the water to try it.
If wet salt sand is what I wanted to hunt I would use the Garrett Infinium or Minelab BBS or FBS detectors ... both are heavier and more expensive.

I need to mention the buttons ... Garrett did a fantastic job on them.
Great feel ... they are crisp and clean when you press one.
Not the mushy, rubbery, feeling some buttons like that have.

There you are ... honest, no hype, no hate, no tall tales, put downs, or build ups ...
Just exactly how I find my new AT Pro to work at the beach here in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Yeah one needs to spend at least 100 serious hours with a new machine to totally familiarize themselves with it and all its quirks. A few hours in your yard or the corner park just doesn't cut it. When I field test one I spend a minimum of 80-100 hours with a new machine and even then there are still new things to learn about it as time goes by.

Bill.

After reading Max's post about how to set it up I went back to the beach and for the first time set it in PRO MODE.
Up to now all I have been using was STANDARD MODE.

What a difference.

In the wet salt sand and even salt water an inch or two deep.
Pro Mode ... Zero Program ... Max sensitivity.
Hardly no chatter and sensitive to small stuff.

Deepest find was a blob of aluminum 10" deep in the wet salt sand.
Posted some photos and full report here on the Beach forum.

This detector rocks!
