i.d. question

Hi All. I have a question about the i.d. numbers on my quattro. I have my quattro set at coin with no discrimination on, so I'm also including iron, and my sound cross-saved at ferrous. My sensitivity is set at auto. I was in my backyard yesterday using the quattro and I noticed when I got a two-way signal that i.d. at 37 or a 38 too, and as I lifted the coil straight up off the signal to hit the pinpoint button, and to make sure I did'nt pick up another target signal nearby, that when I did this the i.d. number changed to -10 and it showed two nail icons? When I put it back down again over the target and swung it left and right again to get the 37, and lifted the coil again the i.d. changed again to -10 with two nail icons. I did'nt dig the signal, because my mom has been a little hesitant lately with me digging the the lawn and stuff, plus if I do dig our dogs come right behind me and re-dig the hole up :). So I've just been practicing with it by listening for the sounds and watching the i.d. numbers. I was wondering if anyone could possibly explain why I would get a solid 37 but when I lift it to hit the pinpoint button the i.d. changes to -10? I should say this does'nt "always" happen on 37 for me. It has just happened in this one spot where I got this 37 i.d. at the time. Thank's for any suggestions. HH. Sincerely, Randy

Hi

Did you do a proper noise cancel first
put sen in manual 15 - 18 or lower
check the yard for a clean spot in all metal mode with no targets
then hold the coil on the ground very still and do a
noise cancel. Then try the same thing again to see
what happens. You may have to lower the sen even more.
Your yard may be highly mineralized.

Hi SnowCampRick. Yes, I first did a noise cancel and kept the detector still while I did this. As far as finding a "clean" spot free of metal, I did'nt search in all-metal mode first to find a spot. But I was also told by Andy sabisch that you don't have to have a "spot-free" area free of metal. As long as there's not a car buried under you coil than your o.k., is how he put it. But I suppose I should still search an area first in all-metal to find a spot as clean as possible, and then try my program again. it definetly would'nt hurt. I also keep my snseitivity in auto. I live in Illinois and so my soil type here is low mineralization. "BUT," I do live about 300 yards from power line towers that go through our back field. So this could be interferring possibly, but with the noise cancel feature I figured that would help with that interference. So I'm not sure what it was exactly. Thank's for the reply. HH. Sincerely, Randy

It is possible there is a good target in the same space as iron. There are also certain targets that have both nonferrous & ferrous metal content and that makes the numbers jump around...such as for steel coins. It could also be the position of the object in the ground especially if the target is an irregular shape. I have a company ring that if laid down reads a consistent 22 on the Quattro. But if the Quattro hits it on edge the numbers start jumping around covering 4-6 different ID numbers from the 20s to the 30s.

I think the best answer to your question would be to dig it up. :goodnight:

When you lift it up you are ground balancing the air ..don't worry about what it reads when you have it in the air just watch the screen when it's on the ground. This detector automatically ground balances all the time. What do you think it's doing when it is pointed in the air. Do you even care? Hope this helped.....You folks need to stay at the Explorer site forum and only use this site to plan hunts and party's.
