I do think it would be nice if someone from Minelab or someone involved in the development of the E-TRAC would explain the details of...

to see how they read --- ya know like broken off beaver tails compared to nickels or, aluminum screw caps in various conditions.

Obviously ML has "profiled" coins as they do not all have the same magnetic signature. Perhaps in neutral ground on "in the clear targets" this was done to help the occasional user?

Throw in the ground factor and see what effect that has on TID stability. Get out there and find some deep hits with the Explorer and then see how the Etrac handles 'em. Especially those fainter ones that read upper left or bounce across the top.

Heck if it's an improvement I might consider one and no, I'm not an Explorer user-- never liked 'em.

1. Could ML change the code on the Track to include a low tone on greater than 18 ferrous readings (example) and still keep the variable high conductive tone scale in tact? As this would provide the simplest and most cost effective means of making the Track an all metal machine like its fore runners. In other words: have a ferrous "greater than / then low tone" option added to the conductive tone function or their current slider.

As the saying goes, "Anything is possible" and in the next generation of E-Trac the engineers may very well pull that comment out of the stack of features or functions that they have collected over the years. Many of the suggestions formed the basis for what the design goal was for the E-Trac. Those of us that were involved in the process from the start . . . . many months ago . . . had additional thoughts but there was just so much they were able or willing to put on the table and some were things that they wanted but others did not see the value of at the time . . . . after considerable time in the field, some of these started to make more sense as one "unlearned" some Explorer techniques and realized that the E-Trac is a totally different beast under the hood with the re-written algorithm it runs. If you have a suggestion for future models, I would suggest drafting a succinct E-mail and sending it to the Minelab team rather than a lengthy post on the forum which will tend to get lost in the noise - Minelab looks at the posts but does not spend all day reading them and taking notes. I will see if they can provide a product development idea Email address where some of these can be sent and captured.

2. Would they be able to update the software through the current USB port?

The simple answer is NO, the software is not updateable via the USB port on the E-Trac. There is protection to prevent the software from being pirated and in order to do this, there is also no way to upload a new version of the software. The sole purpose of the USB port and the Xchange application is to provide users with a conduit to move settings and patterns to / from the detector, share them with others and make a backup in case a Master Reset is required (or one inadvertently does it see what happens as I can attest is NOT what you want to do just to see what it does from personal experience:stars:). While many have postulated that the USB port will allow remote troubleshooting by Minelab or future software upgrades based on what other products can do with a similar connection, the E-Trac does not offer that capability.

Hope this answered your questions

With all you have on your plate I don't know HOW you manage everything as well as you do, most would simply surrender :surrender:
Again ... I'll repeat what I said to you when we spoke on the phone.
Since the cat is now out of the bag per se and these folks now know your involvement, there will be those that really appreciate ANY knowledge you find the time to share and the ... OTHERS ... nobody could satisfy ... no matter what.
It just goes with the territory my friend, every time a new detector hits the market the shills and naysayers have a field day without giving it a chance to prove it's worth.
The opportunity to try a E-Trac here in my heavy iron ore surroundings would be a treat .. you know my area well .. it's tough proving grounds.
Maybe one day huh ;)
Until then .. never forget that you are appreciated by many.

Fortunately, I am sure that the majority on this forum would agree with me in saying that" the statement posted earlier suggesting that Andy has inside information and is withholding it because it will somehow benefit him when his new book is released" is offensive and rude, and I can't for the life of me see how anyone can come to such a conclusion, especially when Andy has devoted so much of his time to personally assist others who enjoy our wonderful hobby.

I for one have also detected since the early seventies and have the up most respect for Andy and many others like Bob Bailey and Jeff Foster who have dedicated so much of there time to bring us so many excellent books over the past years, so please please think about what you are posting and don't look to aim your frustrations at the very people who have chosen to help and share their knowledge with so many others, after all they are also detectorists who don't necessarily agree with all the features on new machines they get to field test or have the opportunity to give their input.

Personally I don't give a monkeys about the FE 12 argument as this is without a doubt is the best detector I have used up to date , just watch as this machine becomes an absolute winner here in UK with our many different coins.

I was really, really hoping they could of update through the USB. Since they can't, the only way to change the all metal mode tones, would be sending it in. Which I don't believe ML will do for the expense alone would be quite significant. That's a real shame. Guess, there's nothing to do but to figure a way around it, like every other metal detector short coming. Well again, thanks for sharing with us what you know. Anyone want to buy a soapbox? Thanks again, Andy.

Don't worry Crash, when you get it you will love it and with the present shortage of machines in the UK you would find plenty of takers should you sell it.
